Ancient Rome did not have the benefit of the perpetual sacrifice. Perhaps if that is factored in, the rejection of Jesus along with all our sins. The graces rejected are more and therefore we are more wicked.
Now that is the most valid point I have heard so far. However, it might also be argued that because of the perpetual sacrifice and the virtue those who have NOT rejected it, we are far less wicked than Ancient Rome; also, in most Western countries, even non-Christians are horrified at the thought of slavery, pedophilia and infanticide, and the last government which passed laws mandating the slaughter of disabled people was Hitler's Third Reich, which is almost universalluy reviled by Christians and secular people alike. I maintain that Christianity, though less common than it was a generation ago, is still serving as Salt and Light in the world, rendering it less wicked than it was prior to the coming of Jesus.
I wonder if apathy was as prevalent as we see it now? Who is not afraid to offend someone these days even with the Truth? Even though the objects of such feared offensive thoughts have been given no authority whatsoever. Although, we are beginning to see the start of such things. All we need do is look at the lawsuits which have been filed and fines levied against those who dare to stand up and be counted for God. In the US at least our own government agencies were being aligned against us. Is this world not upside down today more than any time in history in every way? I look at our present post Christian times and think of Jesus describing a man who has been delivered of demons and then having swept the house but leaving it empty seven demons worse than the first come and take up residence "finding the house unoccupied" and Jesus goes on to say that the state of that man was now worse than before. That is our culture. Delivered once from pagan darkness and receiving God and His Will---we have now made our home "empty" again and our last state is worse than the first. Certainly they did do bad things, but that doesn't make it wrong to praise the good that they did, and the same holds true for every single person on earth, however good or bad. As for excommunicating our Pope, what can I say? You know the will of God better than the Bishops, the Cardinals, and even His Holiness Benedict XVI, Pope Emeritus? I don't hear any of them calling for the excommunication of Pope Francis...what I do hear are the echoing words of the Epistle St. Jude, warning us about "railing speech", and those who "blaspheme whatever things they know not."
I think this is an interesting debate and one can argue that there were several periods during history where evil seemed to be at its peak. Human genetic engineering is just another by-product of abortion! just like human embryonic stem cell research and human primary cell investigation, none of which were practiced in Roman times of old. And such surrender to the material only shows evidence of such diabolical disorientation that has entered even into the best. Due to that aspect of not only hardening of hearts to the real Truth available to them.....such a culture completely avoids and even works for such avoidance to actually search for those places that continue the abominations against nature. No, again, it's the hearts that demonstrate the viciousness of a culture....of just how much the diabolical intentions have been granted permission over and above the only Source for salvation. The industrial killing machines continue...even with forced monetary support by the same govt. which eliminate any sincerity of any so called law on the books. And the technology that now even agrees itself to its own entrance into the quantum field, for the sake of control and, even if it were possible, distortion of what is actually the Mind of God, for the material man's own purpose of self annihilation.....is what defines the current world culture as more anti-God than ever before. Not sure what you mean by MSM persecution; as for the rest of it, yes, such things do exist, but they are universally reviled and are illegal in Western countries, in contrast to ancient times, when this was not the case. Indeed we are a more humane society, and I praise God for it: these atrocities DO NOT occur at the "ratio" that they did in the past, and that is because of the work of the Holy Spirit in the world. Will God be mocked? I'd say that the goals of Lucifer are well nigh accomplished, when people maintain that genetic engineering experiments on animals (NOT humans, that's different) are worse than infanticide, gladatorial games, torture and persecution of Christians, and slavery. I understand the philosophy that you are promoting, (the liberals at the Sierra Club and similar organizations have preached a secularized version of it for years), but there is no way that cloning a sheep or genetically engineering a corn plant or a chicken is the moral equivalent of killing a baby or enslaving another human being.

It's that working via the material world that is permitting the real abomination that weighs upon this moment in time....the annihilation of the part of man that is the only one that is eternal....the spiritual/the soul/the mind. The material is only the means that Satan uses to have his way with such material man in order to divorce him from his salvation/Christ. Without the hope for Mercy through repentance, man only piles upon himself more guilt without a way out and into the acceptance of the great disorientation offered to him, surrendering his soul to the Prince of this world. His bait for any assuage of conscience is the material and finite "satisfactions". So in this time where there is still some hope for mercy, before the time of justice alone, we still pray with greater earnest "Father forgive them for they know not what they do". After the Warning they will know what they do...but the hearts so hardened by compliance to the world of grave sin without repentance, of today, may not accept even that great act of Unfathomable Mercy! And THAT'S the purpose.
