This is the local news that I woke up to this morning and I am very saddened by it. I know that Bishop McGann confirmed by brother since I was my brother's sponsor and I although my memory is going lately I am pretty certain that I was confirmed by him also. I read that he became bishop of my diocese in May of 1976 and this should be the year that I was confirmed but either way I am very saddened by this news. Edited to add: Before my husband leaves for work he watches a few minutes of our local news station mainly to get the weather report and they covered this story this morning referring to the main incident as "a pedophilia orgy". I am not only saddened by this news but sickened by it, I don't expect much from this particular news station but what a way for them to describe this. Three lawsuits allege sexual abuse by John McGann, late Long Island bishop Attorney Mitchell Garabedian outside St. Agnes Cathedral in Rockville Centre on Wednesday. Photo Credit: Howard Schnapp By Bart Jones Updated October 23, 2019 7:42 PM | https://www.newsday.com/long-island/nassau/mcgann-clergy-sexual-abuse-1.37821688 Two women and a man have filed lawsuits that accuse the late Bishop John McGann of sexually abusing them when they were children, their lawyer said Wednesday. Each of the three lawsuits is seeking unspecified damages from the Diocese of Rockville Centre, the nation's sixth-largest with 1.5 million members, and St. Agnes Roman Catholic Church, the local parish where some of the abuse allegedly happened. In a statement, the diocese said Wednesday it is cooperating with law enforcement and the legal system on the McGann case and others, but also noted that the allegations date to 1961 and "involve alleged acts of persons who died many years ago and thus are unable to defend themselves. " The plaintiffs are all now in their 60s and no longer live on Long Island. “It’s time to lift the veil. It’s time for honesty. It’s time for truth. The evil must end," said Garabedian, who has represented hundreds of clergy sexual abuse victims in the Boston area and elsewhere. At the time of the alleged abuse, McGann was a monsignor serving St. Agnes parish, the diocese's seat. He became the diocese's second bishop in 1976 and served until his retirement in 2000. McGann died at age 77 in 2002. Garabedian made the allegations public in February; he filed the lawsuits Tuesday in State Supreme Court in Mineola under the New York State Child Victims Act, which allows a one-year period for abuse claims to be filed regardless of how long ago the abuse occurred. Garabedian identified the plaintiffs as Sheryn Silvestre, 64, of Thurman, New York; Joanne Jack, 63, of Eden Prairie, Minnesota; and Jack's brother, Alexander Jack Jr., 66, of Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. Among the three alleged victims, Garabedian said there were a total of about 20 incidents of abuse by McGann. Two lawsuits each also allege abuse by Msgr. Edward L. Melton; the Rev. Robert L. Brown, a priest at St. Agnes; and John H. Hanlon, a janitor at the church. Speaking by phone from Minnesota, Joanne Jack alleged that McGann abused her when she was 11 at a Christmas party in 1967 in the St. Agnes rectory. She said McGann and other priests were drinking at the party, and were seated around a table. After McGann allegedly abused her, Joanne Jack said he passed her to Melton, who also allegedly abused her. The lawsuit states Joanne Jack is “unable at this time to fully describe all of the details of that abuse and the extent of the harm she suffered as a result.“ She said she ran out of the room after the alleged abuse and "I never ever went back anywhere near that place." The alleged attack "followed me throughout life, the guilt and the shame, the unworthiness, that comes with this kind of thing." Alexander Jack alleges McGann started abusing him around 1963, when he was 10 years old. There were at least four incidents, the lawsuit states. Silvestre alleges McGann started sexually abusing her in 1966 when she was 10. The alleged abuse, which lasted five years, occurred in the St. Agnes rectory and basement, and in her family’s homes in Rockville Centre and Hampton Bays, according to the lawsuit. Silvestre also alleges she was at the same Christmas party with Joanne Jack, and was abused there by Brown and Melton. Joanne Jack and her brother also allege in the lawsuits that they were sexually abused by Hanlon. Alexander Jack alleges abuse by Brown, as well. The Jacks and Silvestre were parishioners at the parish, and the two women attended its school, the lawsuits state. Silvestre's mother worked as a secretary at the parish. Joanne Jack said she decided to go public with her allegations after a friend showed her an article about a clergy sex abuse victim speaking out, “I always remembered what happened, but the guilt and the shame prevented me from speaking up," she said. The diocese, in its statement, said that for more than 15 years through its Child Victims Assistance Program it "has strengthened our efforts toward child protection, abuse prevention and pastoral outreach to survivors." The diocese said it has also received claims of clergy sex abuse from nearly 400 victims since 2017 through its Independent Reconciliation and Compensation Program, and paid out more than $50 million in compensation — with many claims still pending. "The Diocese of Rockville Centre is fully committed to the protection of minors, and undergoes an annual independent audit to evaluate compliance with required child protection practices," the statement said.
You bet we're mad. And so is God. If he hasn't figured that out yet he is in a world of trouble. If people are only attracted to happiness and joy then that must be the reason for the massive influx of new Catholics into the Church. All those bitter saints of the last thousand years must never have converted anyone. That rigidity and all...
Dear God! Incredibly disturbing! My heart breaks for the victims. It is so horrible when something like this hits close to home, and you start searching your memory. Very sorry to hear this, Carol.
You are done with Mark because he used the word funky or because he doesn't bash the pope enough for your liking? Did you read the article? Do you think Michael Voris is going to be a saint some day and Mark Mallett will struggle to get out of purgatory? Do you think God favors Michael over Mark in their approaches? Who's approach will attract people to the faith and who's will drive them away? I believe Mark sees the big picture better than most and while so many are shocked daily and talking endlessly about events most knew they were coming yet can't help pointing fingers. And we are told the battle isn't with flesh and blood but satan and the fallen angels in the spiritual realm. He is right on the pope, he may not be a great pope but he is our pope and if you are 100% against him you are no longer Catholic. I believe when dismissing a brother and good catholic like Mark it may be time to look at whether the anger is radiating outside of what God may accept as righteous. Are we building up or tearing down? Dividing good Catholics into either you're with us or against us is risky to say the least. Voris is a hound dog for sure but is he channeling the Holy Spirit? He speaks to my human side for sure but I think he can and does go too far often. If he dug up all our sins of the past and put them on display would that be ok with anyone? We might look rather un-Catholic and some might even say satanic. Yes, much has to be exposed but we all have to be careful we're not creeping into pride and we judge all these people as being evil incarnate. For every post against them I sure hope there is a prayer said too cause all the posts in the world on here arn't going to change a thing. God is at work and sometimes we need to trust and pray only. For actual Catholics, what goes against the faith is pretty obvious. Maybe this is more of a gossip column though.
I for one never look forward to 'Pope Francis bashing' in any article. I want to hear the facts. I want to hear both sides of the story, but I expect the author of such articles to take a stand. I found Mark's choice of words, 'Vatican funkiness', seriously diminished the offensive nature of the Vatican approved pagan worship and idols. To say that someone does not agree with any writer who will not bash the Holy Father is very harsh. I may disagree with Pope Francis, but I pray for him, and our Church every day. We all have our opinions, and our personal levels of tolerance. This Synod and everything surrounding it have been a very emotional journey, and we have a long road ahead of us. I respect Mark's opinion, and I know he is a good man, but he dances around serious issues with words, and this only adds to the confusion. God, is at work, and I trust that His light will shine upon the Truth.
How timely for this to just pop up in my Twitter feed. Bishop Burbidge @BishopBurbidge · 6h We need to listen to others and respect them even when they disagree with us. However, we are never to compromise who we are and what we believe. Jesus loves us too much to let us stay in the middle. He reminds us that we are either for him or against him. No compromises today!
I read this article. It didn't give me peace. Like Jo, Padraig and Carol have stated, it's best to pray.
]You are done with Mark because he used the word funky or because he doesn't bash the pope enough for your liking? Are Cardinal Burke, Cardinal Muller, Cardinal Pell, Bishop Schneider and all the other Cardinals, Bishops priests and leading theologians throughout the world (not to mention untold numbers of lay people who raise questions , 'Pope Bashing'? I mean really? Listening to Mark is rather like watching your house burn down and being told by Mark you have a heating issue. 'Did you read the article?' Yes
I think there is a very fine line between the time for "guns a blazing" and quiet surrender to God's purification through the confidence in prayer and sacrifice. Michael and others clearly see this moment as a time for 'all hands on deck'. I go back to St. John Bosco's prophecy with the mother ship (our Church) under full assault. The ship is being rocked to nearly tipping over. Some of its own smaller boats have turned on her in fire. It looks as if she is nearing complete ship wreck. All of a sudden two large pillars rise from the turbulent waters of battle. The tallest being shown with the Holy Eucharist and the lesser pillar with our Blessed Mother. Holy Mother Church throws anchors to the two pillars and all the opposing boats turn on each other and are defeated. We are now in the first phase of the battle. The true faith is being attacked and holy mother church is taking on some water. But, we are not close to the pillars arising from the water, which to anchor to. The purification will be seem long. We have barely entered into the turbulence, but we are seeing the first fruits of it. The mother ship is starting to rock and it is taking enemy fire from within. But, I believe the pope we have today, is not the one who will be at the helm when the mother ship is anchored to the two great pillars. I think Mark see's this and thus, not to the point of Voris and company. I believe Mark, in some ways, see's the moment now as a time of prayer and sacrifice and not a time to turn our small boats to fight within and against the mother ship. After the Warning comes, then we will know it is time to battle the true enemies of the faith and prepare to help anchor the mother ship to the two anchors, which rose from the sea of turbulence, due to the appearance of the Man of Sin and the False Prophet. Let's face it. Prayer and Penance is all we can really do at this. Most Catholics in the world are still clueless the water is turbulent. They are clueless their is heresy and apostasy brewing, if they could even understand what that even is. We have to wait in prayer, fasting and hope for the Warning to come. Then we will take on a new battle. The battle of all battle's, prophciesed from of old. https://rosarycoasttocoast.com/the-prophetic-vision-of-st-john-bosco-the-two-columns/
Vatican Office of Telecommunications found tampering with Taylor Marshall's Wikipedia entry. I think it has been corrected now. Not sure. https://wdtprs.com/2019/10/vatican-employee-caught-messing-with-wikipedia-entry-of-taylorrmarshall/
The sleezy wickedness does not surprise. The total incompetance does. Do they not choose people with IT Qualifications and experience to do the dirty deeds?
Just terrible. He had quite a few posts on Twitter about this, and was really beside himself that someone tried to discredit him. Sad and disturbing.

They keep getting their hands caught in the cookie jar, like a bunch of wicked scholl kids. But maybe this is a good sign. That they have a limited pool of wicked, qualified personal to fall back on. So they have to use dolts.
This hot on the heels of that Jesuit in New York reporting him on Twitter for hate speech because he spoke out in defence of the people who threw the pagan idols into the Tiber. He must be hitting a few nerves in the Vatican. Meanwhile, a "Consultor" to the Vatican's Communications Department can undermine the Faith with impunity, and even gets rewarded with a Papal audience for his efforts. At least one or two Bishops have the courage to correct him: https://www.lifesitenews.com/news/b...ng-if-bible-is-right-to-condemn-homosexuality
