Thank you for the update. The students may have been very upset, but rioting will only make a bad situation worse. Very unfortunate that administration did not think about the consequences of such an abrupt decison.

Thank you AED. My daughter leaves on her overseas trip this Sunday. She will be away with her husband for 3 months in the USA and Europe. They did not yet cancel their trip. If they had cancelled it, I do not think they would have been able to get their money back on their tickets. I tried a month ago to warn her not to go, but it did not seem serious to her then.

It was sad saying goodbye to her yesterday (as I will not see her again before she departs) and I cried bitter tears, after she was gone, realising that I may not see her arrive home safely in 3 months time. I gave her Vitamin D and Zinc. She did manage to get some masks for travelling, a week ago, which was a miracle in itself.

We have cases of the virus here in NZ now. Soon we will have our schools and Universities closed in an attempt to slow the rapid spread. We have had a shortage of certain supplies for 2 months as people have tried to prepare for it. There have been no surgical masks available since end of January - unless you happen to get some from someone who had some stored.

Today, thanks to Saint Joseph, I am moving in to a different living situation, a self- contained accomodation set up - so that I can be more isolated from others - as in my job as a caregiver in the community, I will need to work with people who have become ill.

I would appreciate prayers, especially for my daughter and her Husbamd. I feel that it will be salutary for us to feel the fragility of life, and to think more about the four last things, but with the very real liklihood of closed Churches and no Sacraments, it will be terrible!

It reminds me of how Our Lady of Akita said " If sins increase in number and gravity, there will no longer be pardon for them."

I will keep your daughter and family in my prayers. I know what you are going through. My son in Sri Lanka may not be able to get here in June. They have had a case just lately--from italian tourists.
It is terrible to be deprived of Mass and the sacraments. Especially in such a crisis.

Fortunately I've no one abroad. Can only imagine how complicated and vexing this situation is for some (MANY). :(

I will pray for you daughter and her husband too Lumena. Please know that here in the US there is great medical care and the CDC team appointed by our president is doing an exceptional job with containment, preventive strategies and support for all those individual state medical teams and local hospitals despite what you hear/see on the mainstream media. My children are all scattered too. I have one daughter living in Guatemala caring for their poor communities. I pray for her and all my family multiple times daily. This daughter has become very devout in her faith over the last few years. So prayers really do help. I place them all under Mary’s mantle daily. I feel that’s where they are most protected.

Not medical, but veterinary. However, the principles are the same and veterinarians probably deal with mass viral epidemics more often than their medical counterparts. In food animals, which are generally kept in very large numbers in concentrated spaces, Foot and Mouth Disease and Bluetongue are ever-present threats and currently African Swine Fever is devastating the pig population of China and other parts of Asia. The Chinese have shown themselves even more incapable of controlling the swine virus than their efforts to deal with COVID-19. Competence is certainly not a feature of Communism. The habit of dealing with problems through force majeure and intimidation is no substitute for know-how and improvisation. The same applied to the USSR's dealing with the Chernobyl disaster. We know what happened with the Soviet Union and God is certainly directing an awful lot of 'heat' upon China right now.

Ann, Foix News just showed a map of the country on the news with all of the states that have people who have tested positive for COVID-19 but your state, Maine, was not on the list. I wonder what the advantage is of sending students home now from a college in Maine? Maybe they are concerned about students returning from Spring break with the disease maybe from their home state which may have cases or from travel abroad etc. The ripple effects of this is just crazy.

    Indeed.

    This:
Unless they're afraid for their safety in having to leave a Coronavirus-free (for how long?) campus, I'm at a loss.

I think you're right and it is the danger of spring break. The university of maine at Orono just asked students to not go on spring break but to stay on campus. So far for Maine we are good but it is only a matter of time probably since it is in every other NE state.

  10. Maybe has something to do with possible cancellation of NCAA tournament and ban fans w/ UD ready to host it and Dayton is eyeing a No. 1 seed. When it comes to sports these days people can go crazy!

Police launch pepper spray pellets at rioting students after University of Dayton cancels class and shuts down dorms over coronavirus pandemic at school set to host March Madness - as pressure mounts on NCAA to ban fans

    • University of Dayton students rioted after the school announced the cancellation of classes and shuttered dorms over coronavirus concerns
    • Protesters were initially sprayed by cops with 'pepper balls' that contained a 'powder with an irritant that disperses quickly,' the school said
    • The rioting continued until about 2:15am, when protesters finally dispersed and one person was injured by a bottle that was thrown
    • The NCAA, meanwhile, is weighing the possible cancellation of the start of March Madness, which is set to take place on campus next week
    • The men's college basketball tournament generated $933 million last year and typically accounts for around 75 per cent of the NCAA's annual earnings
Students at University of Dayton rioted and were sprayed with 'pepper balls' after the school announced the cancellation of classes and shuttered dorms amid coronavirus concerns, as the NCAA also was mulling the cancellation of March Madness next week.

The Catholic school's announcement Tuesday within hours sent about 1000 protesters into the streets around 11pm, the university said.

Most of the protesters assembled on Lowes Street and were briefly sprayed by police with 'pepper balls', the university said.

Police initially launched pepper balls, which contain powder with an irritant that disperses quickly, that were unsuccessful in reducing the crowd size,' said the university in a statement.

    ........
Cops and students have similarly clashed during the month of March over the last ten years, including in 2018 when a crowd was forced back during a St. Patrick's Day parade.

Police also turned out in riot gear as a crowd celebrated a Dayton Flyers victory in the NCAA tournament in 2014, resulting in 28 arrests, reports WHIO.

The NCAA has thus far defied demands to abandon the lucrative Division I men's basketball tournament this year, because of similar coronavirus concerns.

  12. Over 1,000 People Cured of Coronavirus in Italy

ROME — The number of people in Italy cured of COVID-19 passed the 1,000-mark on Tuesday evening as the country ended its first day of lockdown.

The latest data reported by Italian business newspaper Il Sole 24 Ore show that 8,514 people are currently infected with coronavirus in Italy, while 631 have died from the disease and 1,004 who were infected have since recovered. Some 10,149 are reported to have been infected in the country in all.

On Tuesday, the number of current cases of contagion in Italy grew by only 529, as opposed to the growth of 1,598 cases on Monday, the largest decrease since officials began monitoring the disease.

Among other encouraging news, there has not been a single case of the virus among children in Italy, with no one under the age of 18 coming down with COVID-19.

The average age of people affected by coronavirus in Italy is 69 years, with only 10 percent of cases affecting those between the ages of 20 and 50, Italian health services (ISS) reported.

According to reports from Johns Hopkins University, there have been fewer than 5,000 deaths worldwide (4,284) from COVID-19, and 65,776 who have recovered from the virus.

On Wednesday, Italy entered its second day of lockdown and police have set up checkpoints to stop drivers who venture out on the roads. Minimal travel is permitted but only for reasons that the government judges necessary. Supermarkets are open but lines have formed outside since only a limited number of clients are allowed to enter at any given time.

Strange choice of wording there. Were they "cured" or did they merely recover? Or is there a difference?

Maybe American students need to Learn something from thier Italian counterparts

You know when darkness surrounds the light of Christ shines through God bless these young men and women

The Italian government’s decision to put the whole country in lockdown has prompted 200 student volunteers in the northern region of Veneto to “adopt” residents who need help going to the supermarket or pharmacy. Our reporter Sira Thierij spoke with some of the volunteers.

“When our cities were shut down by the government, we were really concerned about people who cannot take care of themselves, elderly people, but also immuno-suppressed ones and others who could be more vulnerable to infection,” says Tommaso Biancuzzi, who came up with the idea.

The lockdown means movement in and out of cities is severely restricted. Shops and cafes may be open but there is no nightlife and Italians have been told they need a valid work or family reason to travel.

“This is an emergency with no precedent in the history of our country,” he told the BBC. “Of course it’s important to follow the rules and directions given by the health institutions, but we think it's also crucial to preserve solidarity and compassion.”

The volunteers know the risks involved and visit the elderly and the sick wearing face masks and latex gloves.

“Sometimes young people are considered lazy, but we really care,” says Mr Biancuzzi.

Naval Academy has cancelled today their concessions orders for the time being, meaning probably that games will be held without spectators and food.
My son’s restaurant has a big contract with them. :(
Let us not forget that the Gates Foundation held a pandemic drill in October, 2019, if this seems hyped up, and maybe pre-arranged in an odd way?
Also remember it was about 2 weeks after Sr Agnes received her message.

  16. Yeah, I imagine they're going by cases that formerly tested positive who then registered as negative for the number of days that are required for that before they can consider themselves "cured"....at least for this time around. Perhaps "recovery" could mean returning to normal as far as the symptoms are concerned but maybe still testing positive for it being in the system. Yes, not very clear there.

HH, I heard about Microsoft Teams (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Microsoft_Teams) multiple times today for helping people work at home and to "go to school" at home etc. So it appears that Microsoft is going to be making some more money as a result of the Coronavirus.

PS - President Trump is making an announcement tonight at 9pm in regard to COVID-19.
