FORTRESS DC: Entire National Mall Will Be Closed for Inauguration Day, Open to Press and Police Only

The entire National Mall in Washington, DC will be closed on Inauguration Day to avoid any planned violent protests, with security personnel only permitting members of the press to witness the swearing-in ceremony of Joe Biden.

“The extraordinary closure is the latest in a series of security measures to harden the city against the type of violence that rocked the Capitol on Jan. 6. Local and federal officials had already established a downtown security zone and called up more than 20,000 National Guard troops to protect the presidential swearing in on Jan. 20,”
    reports the Washington Post.

“The move is significant because the Mall has been the traditional site where much of the general public has gathered to view the inauguration at the Capitol in person and on large jumbotrons,” adds the newspaper.

“That means no one will be able to get into the Mall,” one of the officials said. “I would think about it as if you are going to watch, you are not going to be able to see anything. You would maybe be able to see the top of the Capitol.”

Wouldn't it be great to have a peaceful protest? No violence, no screaming, no yelling, no marching. It would just be a big nothing. On inuaguration day, next Tuesday, January 21 Biden will be sworn in at noon EST. Let's go dark from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. No internet, no phone, no tv, no radio, no texting. Let our silence be louder than their screaming. Send a message to the social media who wants to silence us that it works both ways. I will spend my time in prayer and meditation.

National Guard at Capitol Authorized to Use Lethal Force in Aftermath of Mob
The dramatic escalation in authorities granted to the 20,000 Guard troops stationed in D.C. is only the latest response to last week’s massive security failure.

The 20,000 National Guard troops preparing for pro-Trump demonstrations this weekend in the nation's capital will be armed and permitted to use lethal force, the headquarters overseeing them says, marking a striking escalation in the way authorities there are preparing for repeat violence after last week's deadly mob.

"On January 12, 2021, National Guardsmen were given authorization to be armed in support of the U.S. Capitol Police to protect the U.S. Capitol and individual members of Congress and their staff," according to a statement from the D.C. National Guard, which is commanding Guard forces in the city, including units deployed from six other states, to provide security for President-elect Joe Biden's inauguration next week.

A defense official confirmed the authorization includes permission for Guard troops to use lethal force.

The request came from federal authorities and was approved by Army Secretary Ryan McCarthy – who oversees D.C. Guard deployments since the District is not a state – indicating it was not a request from the local government.

The Guard forces there to date have performed an unarmed support role, such as directing traffic and logistical support to free up more civilian law enforcement officers to help protect the Capitol and other sensitive sites in D.C. That will change with the new authorization.

"Guardsmen are trained in the use of lethal and less-than-lethal force, de-escalation techniques, as well as the use of protective equipment. This is standard for civil disturbance response missions," according to the statement. "The National Guard is proud to support the Secret Service, U.S. Capitol Police and Park Police who are leading the security efforts during the events for the 59th Presidential Inauguration."

The sudden shift in authorities serves as the latest example of the security response to last week's deadly siege on the Capitol. A mob of President Donald Trump's supporters stormed the building and delayed Congress' certification of Biden's electoral victory shortly after the president concluded a rally roughly a mile away on the National Mall.

The swiftness of the response to a historic security blunder was also evident in widely shared pictures on Wednesday of National Guard forces sleeping in makeshift groups on the floor of the Capitol Visitor's Center and other hallways in the building.

The D.C. Guard says the forces were just resting, and that the Capitol was not where they would be lodging. Nonetheless, the National Guard headquarters at the Pentagon also had to announce late Wednesday that it could not receive "comfort items" for the troops amid an outpouring of support from "many well-meaning and thoughtful citizens."

"While we appreciate the many offers and people who care about our soldiers and airmen, we are not logistically able to accept donations of any kind," it said. "Thank you for caring about your citizen-soldiers and airmen."

National Guard troops have been a part of every Inauguration since George Washington's, according to its Pentagon headquarters.

And while Washington is emptied of ordinary citizens, and National Guardsmen patrol with live ammunition...

Lady Gaga and Jennifer Lopez to perform at the inauguration of President-elect Joe Biden
    • The Bad Romance hitmaker, 34, will The Star Spangled Banner, for the swearing-in ceremony of Biden and Vice-President elect Kamala Harris on January 20
    • On The Floor singer Jennifer, 51, is also on-board to perform - before a TV special airs which features Demi Lovato and Justin Timberlake
    • Next Wednesday's inauguration will largely be conducted virtually in keeping with safety protocols amid the ongoing coronavirus pandemic
    • At least 50 agencies and private companies have formed a 'Multi-Agency Command Center' (MACC) in Washington, D.C. ahead of Inauguration Day

Lady Gaga and Jennifer Lopez will perform at the inauguration of President-elect Joe Biden on January 20.

Variety reports The Bad Romance hitmaker, 34, will perform national anthem, The Star Spangled Banner, for the swearing-in ceremony of Biden and Vice-President elect Kamala Harris, which will be held on the West front of the U.S. Capitol building.

On The Floor singer Jennifer, 51, is also on-board to perform - before a TV special airs which features Demi Lovato and Justin Timberlake.

Oscar-winner Gaga is a long-time supporter of Biden and has been vocal throughout this election season, joining the future president on the campaign trail.

The invocation will be delivered by Father Leo O'Donovan and the benediction by Reverend Dr. Silvester Beaman - both of whom are longtime friends of the Biden family.

Next Wednesday's inauguration will largely be conducted virtually in keeping with safety protocols amid the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.
Security has also been ramped up amid fears of violence on the day, after a mob of Trump supporters stormed the U.S. Capitol last week.

Tony Allen, CEO of the Presidential Inauguration Committee, told Variety: 'Our first priority is safety - so while many of us will be watching safely from our homes, we are creating real moments of connection that highlight a new inclusive American era of leadership that works for and represents all Americans.'

Tom Hanks will host a primetime TV special to commemorate Joe Biden's inauguration later that day.

The special, titled 'Celebrating America', will air on the evening of January 20, just hours after Biden is sworn in as the 46th president of the United States.

The 90-minute extravaganza will additionally feature musical performances by Demi Lovato, Jon Bon Jovi and Justin Timberlake.

Joe Biden and Kamala Harris are also set to make a special appearance on screen, according to Variety.

On Wednesday, Timberlake announced on Instagram that he and Ant Clemons have co-written a song for the special, titled Better Days.

'I actually recorded my final vocals for this song on election night...,' he revealed alongside a montage of footage from the recording studio.

'I’m very honored to announce we will be performing this song on January 20th for the Presidential Inauguration,' added Timberlake.

'We have a long way to go to fix, undo, and rebuild this country... but I hope now, despite the past four years, we are on our way.'

I watched with great joy the Inaugural Address of Trump in 2017. It was a superb address and Obama was squirming. I will not watch Biden. In one sense, I feel badly for Joe. He has been deceived and his mental acuity is very poor. The Democrats are using him and will discard him when convenient.

    Lord have mercy!

The local news is reporting that they are not sure if the entire Mall will be closed. This report was at 4:30 pm DC time, WTOP news radio, DC.
It would really only make sense to close it, though. So many troops are in place, and one cannot drive in DC now until all this is over.
