    PNF,

I read through the entire article. I found Benedict's reference to Tyconius, and the analysis of author, Marco Tosatti, fascinating. Tyconius' portrayal of the Church in the endtimes can be seen to correlate very well with our times, almost uncannily! In fact it reassures my heart that all is not lost. After all, Tyconius was a member of a schismatic group, the Donatists; yet Benedict thought it relevant to relate Tyconius' eschatological insights to our present dilemma! Could such a contrast have helped cement his decision to resign? Remains to be seen. But the following portion of the article highlights the contrast.

Referring to “false brothers,” Tyconius speaks in the biblical sense, following the example of both Saint Paul[13]and Saint John.[14] Tyconius thus refers to a mysterious presence of evil within salvation history that is seen throughout Sacred Scripture and culminates in the bipartite structure of the Church: she consists of two distinct bodies that co-exist in the same visible institution even though they are diametrically opposed to one another.

As David Robinson, the author of the introduction to the English translation of Tyconius’ Exposition, notes: “For Tyconius…there are a left and a right part in the body of the Lord. The church is both black and beautiful, good and evil, enemy and beloved.”[15] In his own words, Tyconius expresses this belief in a variety of ways: “in the one body there are two parts: one persevering, the other transgressing”;[16] “the good are mixed with the evil in the church up to the end of time”;[17] “the church will not spew out every evil person, but [only] some, for the purpose of showing to the world what the last persecution will be like. But with one mind she tolerates the others. Although spiritually they are outside, nevertheless they seem to be active inside”;[18] “there are two buildings in the church, one [built] upon rock, another upon sand”;[19] “this is those who seem to be in the church but are [really] outside”;[20] “the false brothers, who, having rejected Christ, confess him with their mouth but by their actions say: ‘We have no king except Caesar’”;[21] and, “there is blasphemy not only in the kings of the world, by whom those inside [the Church] are condemned; but it is even in the very ones who are inside.”[22]

What remains for us who strive to not be severed from the Vine, is to unswervingly pursue holiness and faithfulness, so that our love and witness be fruitful. Benedict is a public figure whose decisions and choices have been put under the microscope. Most of us have been spared such scrutiny from men (though not from God). May we be single-hearted and not bipartite. My job is to live out the Bishop's prayer which my bishop prayed at my ordination, a prayer that any of us can apply to ourselves:

Send forth upon them, Lord, we pray, the Holy Spirit, that they may be strengthened by the gift of your sevenfold grace for the faithful carrying out of the work of the ministry. May there abound in us every Gospel virtue: unfeigned love, concern for the sick and poor, unassuming authority, the purity of innocence, and the observance of spiritual discipline. May your commandments shine forth in our conduct, so that by the example of our way of life, we may inspire the imitation of your holy people. In offering the witness of a clear conscience, may we remain strong and steadfast in Christ, so that by imitating on earth your Son, who came not to be served but to serve, we may be found worthy to reign in heaven with him, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God for ever and ever.

if the sacrament of the Eucharist makes Christ and his bride one flesh through transubstantiation (in a manner analogous to holy matrimony) then what happens to that part of the evil church in the eucharistic communion?

This is an individual and personal matter for each of us and our Christ and there is clear teaching on this from our Church. If we are not in a state of mortal sin, the Eucharist brings us into union with Jesus on the Cross. The best place (and most freedom we can attain) is to be joined in Christ’s sufferings and helping him by filling up with our own afflictions what is lacking in the rest of His Mystical Body.

If we are in mortal sin (separated from God’s grace) and receive the Eucharist, we eat and drink our own destruction.

Jesus always comes with mercy and justice and is unchanging. What does change is how we choose to meet Him.

Those who do not know these rules will be treated differently than those who know and purposely choose to ignore them. To ignore God’s word is to make oneself equal to God and was the sin of Adam. Adam’s love for God, and God’s mercy through Jesus’ passion, saved him and Eve after 4000 years in Abraham’s bosom. Partaking of the Eucharist while being knowingly in mortal sin, is not a position any of us should be in before our Lord. This is why it is so bad that politicians are not forbidden from receiving Eucharist when in moral sin. Church leaders are condemning them and themselves by this knowing deception.
    Peace. Ed

Right from the very beginning Judas, the Son of Perdition lived with Mary , Jesus and the other 12 Apostles in the very first Seminary which was a cradle of Holiness. In spite of the very best efforts of Jesus and Mary and the superb example of those around him he became a serial thief and eventually betraying Jesus Himself to Capture, Torture and Death and in the end committing self murder in despair.

Such a Mystery. Jesus and Our Lady clearly knew Judas for what he was. Yet he was allowed to stay on to fulfill the full workings of this wickedness. Why?

Jesus, I think, gives the answer in the story of the Weeds and Wheat.

    Matthew 13:24-30

The Parable of the Wheat and the Tares
24 Another parable He put forth to them, saying: “The kingdom of heaven is like a man who sowed good seed in his field; 25 but while men slept, his enemy came and sowed tares among the wheat and went his way. 26 But when the grain had sprouted and produced a crop, then the tares also appeared. 27 So the servants of the owner came and said to him, ‘Sir, did you not sow good seed in your field? How then does it have tares?’ 28 He said to them, ‘An enemy has done this.’ The servants said to him, ‘Do you want us then to go and gather them up?’ 29 But he said, ‘No, lest while you gather up the tares you also uproot the wheat with them. 30 Let both grow together until the harvest, and at the time of harvest I will say to the reapers, “First gather together the tares and bind them in bundles to burn them, but gather the wheat into my barn.” ’ ”

Jesus is telling us that there is a time and Season for all things including the time of Harvest. Which is I think what Pope Benedict and Tyconius are referring to here.

    Ecclesiastes 3:1-8

3 For everything there is a season, and a time for every a]">[a]purpose under heaven: 2 a time to be born, and a time to die; a time to plant, and a time to pluck up that which is planted; 3 a time to kill, and a time to heal; a time to break down, and a time to build up; 4 a time to weep, and a time to laugh; a time to mourn, and a time to dance; 5 a time to cast away stones, and a time to gather stones together; a time to embrace, and a time to refrain from embracing; 6 a time to seek, and a time to lose; a time to keep, and a time to cast away; 7 a time to rend, and a time to sew; a time to keep silence, and a time to speak; 8 a time to love, and a time to hate; a time for war, and a time for peace.

The present time in the Church is a time which permits the weeds to flourish greatly. But the Harvest time draws near were they will all be plucked up and burnt.

And after the morsel, Satan entered into him. And Jesus said to him, That which thou dost, do quickly.

Thank you for sharing this wonderful article PNF. There is a mystery about the Church which we should all meditate and pray much that we have pure hearts so as to not end up among the false children.

I will tell you one place where you can see the true and false Church come very much face to face and that is in the lives of the Saints who were members of Religious Orders.

For instance in the case of St Margaret Mary Alocoque (who saw the Sacred Heart) there is an instance were a large group of her fellow nuns dragged her out of bed in the middle of the nights , screaming and cursing and gave her a good beating and kicking up and down the corridors of her convent while the other nuns listened in terror (but were no help).

In the case of Saint Father Charles of Mount Argos there was one priest who followed the poor Saint round his entire Religious Life being purely nasty to him and continually criticising and insulting him. The other religious did not intervene as they assumed this priest had been asked to do so as a test of the saints humility.

Saint John Bosco came under considerable attack from his own Archbishop of Turin who had been a fellow Seminarian with him but later turned completely Feral.

Fr Hardon SJ whose Cause is going ahead in Rome relates that when he studied there relates that certain priest slammed the door in his face when they saw him coming.

The list goes on and on and on...you can set your clock on this happening. It is nearly inevitable.

Tosatti says at the very beginning of this article that " a scholar has sent us this short essay." Who is this "scholar'? It's an anonymous article. This is a sticking point for me. And as Mario discerned, Tyconius was a member of a schismatic group. We need to discern.

What I don't understand in the thesis of tyconius is that I always understood that the false Church was a body totally different from the true Holy Church not an integrated part of it, that's because in apocalypse 12 Our Lady (who is Immaculate from Conception) seems to represent the Church, besides Christ said a divided kingdom would not survive, it always seemed to me that blasphemies and heresies were thorns in the Immaculate Heart of Mary but not a part of the Church.

I’m very hesitant and being careful here…. I think as with most things like this kernels of truth. But even the article admits his therory is not aligned with CCC:

Faithful Christians usually assume that the “falling away” – the “separation,” the “departure” – will be instigated by droves of people “leaving” the Church, a massive exodus of unbelievers. The definition of “apostasy” in the Catechism of the Catholic Church – “a total repudiation of the Christian faith” – plainly conveys such an idea.

    Lots to discern..

The article reference 2 Thes chapter 2, verse 3.

Perhaps helpful to read it in context within entire chapter…..

2:1 About the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, brothers, and our being gathered to him:

2:2 please do not be too easily thrown into confusion or alarmed by any manifestation of the Spirit or any statement or any letter claiming to come from us, suggesting that the Day of the Lord has already arrived.

2:3 Never let anyone deceive you in any way. It cannot happen until the Great Revolt has taken place and there has appeared the wicked One, the lost One,

2:4 the Enemy, who raises himself above every so-called God or object of worship to enthrone himself in God's sanctuary and flaunts the claim that he is God.

2:5 Surely you remember my telling you about this when I was with you?

2:6 And you know, too, what is still holding him back from appearing before his appointed time.

2:7 The mystery of wickedness is already at work, but let him who is restraining it once be removed,

2:8 and the wicked One will appear openly. The Lord will destroy him with the breath of his mouth and will annihilate him with his glorious appearance at his coming.

2:9 But the coming of the wicked One will be marked by Satan being at work in all kinds of counterfeit miracles and signs and wonders,

2:10 and every wicked deception aimed at those who are on the way to destruction because they would not accept the love of the truth and so be saved.

2:11 And therefore God sends on them a power that deludes people so that they believe what is false,

2:12 and so that those who do not believe the truth and take their pleasure in wickedness may all be condemned.

2:13 But we must always thank God for you, brothers whom the Lord loves, because God chose you from the beginning to be saved by the Spirit who makes us holy and by faith in the truth.

2:14 Through our gospel he called you to this so that you should claim as your own the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ.

2:15 Stand firm, then, brothers, and keep the traditions that we taught you, whether by word of mouth or by letter.

2:16 May our Lord Jesus Christ himself, and God our Father who has given us his love and, through his grace, such ceaseless encouragement and such sure hope,

2:17 encourage you and strengthen you in every good word and deed.

If we look at the parable of the wheat and the tares, both have been planted in the one field. The field is clearly associated by Jesus with the kingdom of heaven. Well then, the question arises, "Doesn't this kingdom relate to the Church since the end of the parable refers to heaven itself as the barn. Doesn't our current situation include within the bosom of the Church clergy who are apostate, seeking to remake the Church according to the enemy's (sower of the tares) design?

Notice Jesus' words, "Let them grow together."

O Mary conceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to thee!

I would like to add that I don't see any organizational structure within the Church that seeks to break away, but rather those who seek to lead as many as possible astray with their heretical program and deception. An obvious tare is Cardinal Jean-Claude Hollerich of Luxembourg.

    Lord have Mercy!
