Franco did not fight the Communists alone. Many of the senior politicians and military officers who were allied with him certainly did not fight to create a dictatorship with Franco in charge. They saw him as the means of ridding Spain of Communist government not the substitute for it. Many of his allies were monarchists and others envisaged a group leadership under a grand council as was the case in Italy (at least nominally).

Once he got temporary and emergency executive powers, he moved to make them permanent. He suffered, like all dictators, from a certainty that he knew best and he grasped every lever of power and surrounded himself with advisors whose main recommendations were that they were not potential rivals, were blackmailable and were committed personally to him whatever their shortcomings (See Hitler, Stalin, Xi, Putin et al). He didn't need to be a dictator to save Spain from the left, he just wanted to be one. The camps containing the leftists after the war were comparable to the gulags.

Canadian Prepper has a video coming out next on your WWIII bugout bag. Interestingly, while this war may get very serious indeed, Glenn said recently, in his interview about Conchita of Garabandal with John Henry Westen, that Our Lady told Conchita that there would be no WW3.

Alexander Mercouris coined the term 'escalation escalator' for this general phase. The salient feature of the escalator being that you can't go back and you can't jump off!

I don’t believe Franco had any other choice. Spain was in shambles after its Civil War. Before he died he made sure all was settled. He left a monarchy and a parliament that was well organized. Unfortunately, Spain fell again to the leftists. And it’s been suffering from a terrible economy. I was in Spain in the summer, and the LGBT signs were everywhere. It’s not the Spain of the 60’s and 70’s, where there was a sense of morality and decency with the public. The Churches were full, and there was so much celebration.

You'll sometimes get a good dictator, of which Franco I'd assert was one. You'll never get a good democracy. All the primary social ills which are in opposition to Christ are flowing out of modern democracies. The Greeks invented democracy and soon realised it was essential to abandon it. I think what happens is that democracy too easily allows those in power, who might not even be known or very obvious, to manipulate the largest common denominator. Such manipulations, when successful, can then be granted the near-sacred authority of 'the people', although what they have voted for might be completely above their heads. Here in Ireland in the last decade or so, I have witnessed, and voted against, referenda for the ultimate control of children (ultimate authority essentially removed now from their parents), homosexual marriage parody and unrestricted abortion. It has been accompanied by the relegation of the reputation of the Catholic Church to one of public enemy and of ridicule, all accompanied by majority, 'democratic' approval and without a drop of blood needing to be shed or a single person placed in a 'gulag' (yet). I know of no dictatorship in history to have inflicted such a sudden and conplete demoralisation. At least in Stalin's time the people might still have secretly cherished the Truth. Now, most of them willingly and cheerfully abandon it.

A little known fact is that, during the Second World War, Franco's Spain, apart from the Vatican, saved more Jews from the Holocaust than any other country. No Jew that crossed the Pyrenees was sent back, nor were their movements impeded in any way. Additionally, all Spanish embassies were ordered to issue Spanish passports to any Jew that requested one. The 50,000 or so Jews that were rescued were lucky Spain wasn't a democracy like all those Allied democracies that didn't lift a finger to help them.

Excellent observation. The left media over the past century managed to blacken Franco's reputation with help from Hemingway and other literati. No one ever mentions the communists wholesale murder of innocent Catholics during that struggle either. Franco and his army put a stop to it. The Spanish Civil War was a communist incursion violently launched.

The Spanish Civil War is unique for its history having been written by the losers. The Soviets pumped in enormous amounts of resources for this war. Franco gratefully accepted help from Mussolini and Hitler, but he didn't help them in WWII-if anything, his neutrality leaned towards the Allies.

    True.

Plato (or was it Aristotle - or both?) considered democracy an inferior type of government- one that inevitably led to demagoguery and tyranny.

    Were they right?

Well, look at the fruits of democracy around us.

Look at what happened in New Zealand ,Australia, Canada, France and Western Europe in the last couple of years.

And what’s happening in the US today.

The CP does speak of WWIII but he has also said that we could experience 4 different wars at the same time, ugh. Russia vs NATO, China vs Taiwan, North and South Koreas and Iran vs Israel? in the ME. God help us all.

What strikes me also is that we’re promised a KINGDOM of God here on earth.

    Not a democracy of God.

So if this is true - and it must be because it comes from Our Lord - it may well be that democracies will be but a little footnote - a hiccup - in the history of humankind.

    Time will tell.

Ironically, democracy is only worthy as a system of government when its demos are of a very high moral calibre, in the God-fearing sense. When God establishes His Kingdom, His subjects will possess the required moral calibre, but, on account of this, will also be of the view that His Kingship will be incontestably superior.

    Brilliant!!! Just...brilliant.

The best example in all of history.

Democracy is ultimately mob rule...or rather rule by those who can best control it.

The Jerusalem mob had only hailed and welcomed Our Lord into the city a few days before, had they not? How easy it was to get them to do the exact opposite. Our Lord could see that they didn't know what they were doing and asked His Father to forgive them. Mobs today are just as fickle and ignorant.
