I was at Confession today to a stranger priest who I believe was a good and holy man I confessed to him that I did not do enough penance. He asked me what penance I did and he was horrified. He said that God did not ask us to punish ourselves to do penance. He said Wednesday and Friday fasting was good enough I reminded him of what St Paul said in Acts that we must be like athletes training for the race I reminded him that all the saints I had ever read about performed penance He became angry and cut me off He was a very good priest I think , but totally wrong. An example if hiw bad things have got. If I had thought about it I could have pointed out the three little children at Fatina who dud little else but penance Penance is the hard edge of spirituality. The constant reading of thrblives of the saints An living relationship with .y guardian angels An deep awareness of any criticism of myself may very well be true. Constant laughter.
