When Pope Benedict resigned, Mirjana from medjugorje said there was "a lesson in it". Not quite sure what she meant but perhaps it aludes to the current papacy and how people were always so critical of Pope Benedict for trivial reasons. Perhaps this is the "lesson"- what we are currently experiencing, confusion etc., and why people should have been more appreciative of Benedict when he was Pope.

I’ve had a look at the prophecies of St Malachi/S Filippo Neri and the lines beneath Gloria Olivae don’t specify one pope only. As I read it, extreme persecution follows B16 and the Holy Church ‘will sit’ (‘sedebit’). So according to this prophecy we have an indeterminate time in which there seems to be no valid pope. I’m not saying I buy into these prophecies ( extreme persecution would have to be a spiritual scourge for this to make sense) but I’m interested in prophecy in general. My take is that according to this document there is a period when the Church suffers and no pope is named. With restoration of orthodoxy we will see a new era with Petrus Romanus. Recall the weird signs when the halo, keys and right hand were blown from the statue of St Peter in Buenos Aires and more recently the fall of the icon on Easter Day right by the feet of Francis. There have been other signs too that could be interpreted by the passage in these prophecies which hints of a series (?) of invalid popes, or one at least.
I do not at all dismiss these prophecies. They are uncannily accurate. If I had any doubt the choice of Benedict as a name for Cardinal Ratzinger clinched it. The olive is the symbol of the Benedictines.
Not quite. It is a common misunderstanding because of the Olivetan Benedictines who are a branch of the wider Benedictine family, though a small one. You will often see PAX surrounded by a crown of thorns or a raven as symbols of the order. As a lay Benedictine I’ve never seen the olive or olive branch used to represent the order. The Olivetans are unusual in that their focus is on a more active life than Benedictines usually have, outside teaching. I would argue though that Pope Benedict was a man of peace, as the olive branch symbolises. He named himself after B15 who strove for peace, although unsuccessfully. His generosity to the Anglicans and Traditionalists as well as non-Catholics like the orthodox, were those of a peacemaker. I could go on, about his warmth towards us in the UK during his visit and his visits to Auschwitz and the Rome synagogue. The trouble with prophecy is that usually you have to wait until after the events!
