What I forgot to include in my previous post is this: this pattern is often called a “stupid virus” — one that kills its host so quickly that it barely has time to use that person as a vector for transmission. A classic example would be Ebola.

The bigger issue is the balance between mortality and transmissibility. COVID-19 had a kind of Russian roulette built into its mortality rate, but it also had a clearly high transmission potential.

Hantavirus is not a new virus. Last year, it was reported as the cause of death of the wife of Gene Hackman, who had dementia.

Because of the unfortunate cruise incident, any outbreak involving this deadly virus anywhere in the Western world is now likely to draw media attention. However, if authorities identify a traceable chain of global spread originating from the initial outbreak on the ship, that would be a serious reason for concern.

Gene Hackman’s wife also died from hantavirus. It is spread through rodent droppings and rodent urine. Was the cruise ship infested?

The idea of taking a cruise just keeps getting less and less appealing.

I couldn’t find the answer to your question. At this moment, it would be optimistic to assume the answer is yes. (n)(n)(n)

The cruise originated in Argentina, in the area where the type of hantavirus which is transmitted human to human is found. Patient zero (the original infected individual) was an ornithologist from the Netherlands and visited a landfill known to be infested with the mice that carry hantavirus a few days before boarding the cruise. He visited the landfill because it was home to a rare species of bird. His wife was also infected, and they became ill a few days into the cruise, and it spread to others from them.

I’m shocked, I am. Completely taken aback. Who could have believed it?

No connections with ‘organised crime’? The whole fraud looks fairly organised to me. Doesn’t seem to have impacted his ability to ‘earn’ money and he probably considers his brief, no doubt quite pleasant, vacation in Pleasanton quite worth it.

I’m reading Chesterton at the moment. To paraphrase some of what I read last night: Capitalism (certainly of the vulturous kind we have all become too familiar with) and Communism he describes as two sides of the same coin, both being the centralised accumulation of wealth which has been expropriated from the majority.

Oddly enough, both forms of wealth accumulation were dreamt up by the same religious tendency.

At the root of the evil is the sin of usury by the same religious tendency.

The Muslims like the (old) Catholics condemn usury.

Well fundraising is how the non profits keep going. Unfortunately in some cases.
If a corporation has the money to pay for that ticket they can write it off as a donation on taxes. Some people have more money than others to support their causes. Our church is constantly doing fund raisers. Non profits have to figure out how to raise money to operate. When I served in a non profit group I was expected to make a donation of $500 per year to help fund it. That is a substantial amount of money for us. I have friends who would not blink at a $500 donation. So we have wealthy people and middle class and poor people. It’s always been like that. So, it depends on your status, the more you are given the more you are obligated to share. If you have nothing, you have more financial freedom.

The Iranians and the Chinese outplayed Donald Trump and Israel. Trump went to China, who would then pressure Iran to reopen the Strait of Hormuz. China said the strait would be reopened together with the U.S. However, while Trump was in China with his billionaire-style diplomacy, Iran allowed all Chinese tankers to pass through and escorted them out, while U.S. warships could not stop or attack them because of Trump and the delegation being in China. Iran would receive money and weapons from the Chinese, China would get oil, and Trump got played

It sounds like a lot of money to a one income person. But businesses donate a lot of money because they have it. And they get great tax deductions. It’s a win win because they get the deduction, the non profit receives needed income. I had my own business for over 40 years, of course I only grossed $100,000 per year. Net was about 45,000 which is an average income. I had to pay two part time employees etc, it was a lot of work. But if my company donated it was a good tax write off. To a multi million dollar corporate $100,000 is nothing. And it’s great advertising for them. Do you ever look at the credits on documentary movies, who funds them? Private corporations and foundations. It works great if done right. The church is wonderful at fundraising, every year I can count on the Bishop’s appeal. Many in my Parish will cut a check for $10,000. And there are people who can’t give anything. It’s always been that way.
