Was reading some of Padre Pio's words before and he spoke about the trial of abandonment or "divine abandonment" where the soul perceives that God has abandoned them, but Padre Pio emphasises that God hasn't even though it may appear so and that people who love Jesus can experience this at times.
It is a very trying purification to love God when there is no sense that He is with you. It requires raw trust and sometimes that is excruciatingly hard.
