Today is the Feast of the Canadian Martyrs, and as most of you know, I have a huge devotion to them and seek to have a courage and zeal like theirs. Last year while study their life, I came across noteworthy Huron converts who have yet to be canonized; they are Joseph Chiwatenhwa, his wife Maria Aonetta, and a strong, masculine chief by the name Eustace Ahatistari. All these people heard God's calling before the Martyrs arrived, Joseph and Maria maintained a monogamous relationship and Eustace sensed a Spirit assisting him in battle, that was not known to the Hurons. Both Joseph and Eustace were martyred, Eustace was captured and executed by the Iroquois, and Joseph was found dead one morning with a wound that greatly resembled the way in which sorcerers were executed by the Hurons. Please pray for the canonization of these Hurons, I plan on mailing the Holy Father this Christmas and asking him to look into the canonization of these people.
I remember, as a child, being told I might one day have to die for the sake of Christ. Then I moved away from home (parents) and got on with my life. US rather quiet and "smooth sailing" for years. Now it's back to wondering if.
Yes, RW, there is a great historical novel which details Eustace's and others' martyrdom as well as Isaac Jogues' life among the Iroquois, Saint Among Savages, the Life of Isaac Jogues. North American martyrs, pray for us!
