I got caught up in the protest traffic delay twice this morning I rarely go to the city but had to this morning. I did not mind so much as I support them.

 

The Irish army to be deployed in Ireland against their own people.

Any Government that uses its army against its own people is a tyranny.

Fuel protesters are continuing their blockade of the Whitegate Oil Refinery in east Cork with some 16 trucks and tractors blocking the entrance ways with no sign of the owners removing them, as requested by the Minister for Justice.

Minister Jim O'Callaghan warned that if they remained in place, they would be removed by the Defence Forces whose assistance has been requested.

As they await the arrival of the army, the protesters - many of whom have been here overnight and have not slept - say they determined to stay.

Haulier Jason Cullinane said: "We are taxpayers, we are not criminals and Micheál Martin and Jim O'Callaghan should be ashamed. We are the people paying the bills in the country and keeping the country going."

Another haulier, Tim Coleman from Enniskeane, said it is disappointing but no surprise.

"It is going to be ruthless. We just have to take it on the chin and stand our ground," he said
