It might be a bit spookey but it is mostly a wonderfully soothing response from Cardinal Burke. Simply wonderful spiritual advice here that we must pick ourselves up anew each day and set out as pilgrims on the way to our eternal destination, picking up our Cross as we go. We must persevere to the end, we must run the race to the end, we must fight the good fight.
I have been following Sean Ryan for about 4 years. He has interviewed several of my favorite people. FrDan Reehil and Fr Ripperger and Dan Schneider who worked with Fr Ripperger. He has returned to his Catholic faith after a hard and dangerous life. He was a Navy Seal and had severe PTSD and treatment that involved psychedelics. Bad idea!! I am so pleased to see Cardinal BUrke interviewed with him. Shawn has the potential to be a great Catholic evangelist.
I was very surprised to see Cardinal Burke agree with Sean that it was Demons afflicting him, That would not have been my first port of call in Discernment, it would have been regarding the condition of his brain, as it would with everyone who suggested such a thing. Then after ruling out the brain then move onto the paranormal. Not demons first. Personally to me Sean looks very unwell. I am not being negative about the poor man, but I think he needs a lot of help. Assuring him that it was indeed Demons was not the kind of help he needed. It is only affirming him in this stuff. Not a helpful diagnosis, plus it does not make us Catholics look too good. The Cardinal would have done well at least have asked them to switch off the camera so they could talk about this stuff in private, not in front of half the planet.
I thought exorcisms were supposed to be kept strictly secret? Like, not openly disclose whatever occurs in the process?
I think they try to keep the details of the poor victim hidden. I used to like the Exorcists kinda coming out of the closets and going public. But now there is far, far too much of it. It would be better if they stopped going public for a while. It maybe uncovers an unhealthy interest in the subject. Enough is enough. There must be dozens of them doing interviews now. Also it can lead to seeing demons under every carpet so to speak, we can become obssessive about it all
I don't think it is too healthy to think about the devil too much. One time St Teresa of Avila's father was going on a retreat and he told her he was going to meditate on the devil and hell. She advised him not to. Wise. Small doses. We are getting a deluge of exorcists at the moment.
I think that if the preternatural pheneomenon are true then it is the demonic and perhaps that is why C. Burke was in agreement. If might be the case that C. Burke had been briefed beforehand by Fr Ripperger
Maybe. It is possible. But the impression on the video was that it was an on the hoof discernment about something so serious. If there had been deeper off screen discernment it would have been much , much better to give this clarity onscreen when he gave it. I have to say my impression was that the Cardinal did this on the spot. It is always possible that he received very,very special graces from God to do this. But it makes me uneasy. If someone was to tell us publically that he is being attacked by demons I don't think the best or most wise response would be to go along with it, for obvious reasons.
In an interview with Father Ripperger about a month ago -- that I link below - Shawn Ryan said that he had spent 3 weeks ( I think) at Father Rippergers monastery. In that interview Ryan states that he had been through something he was not yet ready to talk about but during that time he had seen hell. I would think that before appearing on Ryan's show, Cardinal Burke would likely have spoken with Fr. Ripperger and so knows Shawn's background.
I believe both the Cardinal and Fr R feel hightening the awareness of tbe danger of these psychedelics is important. SO many veterans have made use if them to treat PTSD and the consequences are catastrophic. Shawn Ryan wants to sound the alarm for fellow vets. No explanation of this would be without his permission.
I remember Father Corapi saying that illegal drugs were often cursed before they were sold in order to ensure successful sales. So that may or may not have been a factor along with the drug itself. Also, Shawn's experiences as a navy seal and a CIA contractor may have opened the door to evil spirits. He certainly could have a very positive influence on many vets and young men. He seems open and honest. Im praying for him.
Again this is a matter of context and this context did not come across in the interview with the Cardinal.
I think another source of concern for me with the present landslide of exorcists going public is this. The handbook for exorcism is the, 'De Exorcismis et Supplicationibus Quibusdam', ('Of Exorcisms and Certain Supplications'.) An update of the old, 'Roman Ritual' ('Rituale Romanum') The Rite of Exorcism forbids the Exorcist from having conversations with demons with the exception of obtaining necessary information, such as the name of the Demons and how they got Possession, necessary information in order to drive the devil out. The reason for this restriction is obvious. The devil is a liar and the Father of Lies. Not only is he a Master Liar but he is a master of the half lies. He concocts the truth with lies and this makes the lies far, far more dangerous. By repeating the devils lies we spread them. But I have noticed in the broadcasts of many exorcists they are repeating the words of Satan and the demons and justify this be suggesting that they have somehow forced the devil to tell the truth. I commanded him, “Are they the same entity?” The response was, “They are the same.” I was then reminded of something I had just read; Fr. Gabriel Amorth, the famous exorcist of Rome, had said he thought they were two different entities. So, I said as much: “Fr Amorth said they are two different beings.” A mistake. I had veered into an area of curiosity which, in this case, is a low level sin of pride. This gave the demons an opening and they jumped at it! For the next 24 hours, I was pummeled with demonic obsessions in my head– all sorts of wild temptations and attacks. Fortunately, with repentance and prayer, it finally stopped. Pope Francis’ admonition against talking to Satan is important, not only because Satan will outwit us, but also it will give him an opening into our heads. Being pummeled by demonic obsessions is no fun, at best. At worst, it can lead to dire consequences. I assure you; I am now much more careful not to cross the line.'
A good example of where an exorcist engaged in a conversation with the devil and came to grief was the exorcism of Anna Eclund in 1928. During a long conversation with the exorcist the devil claimed that the anti Christ was alive at the time and living in the Middle East and even described him. Also Tattoos . I don't think I have seen a tattoo shop yet that did not make me nervous. Another thing is idols, which people buy so casually, like a statue of the Budhha for instance. But buying anything second hand we have to be careful. If something seems strange or off or mysterious it might be better not to buy. Including second hand clothes. \jewellery is another big cause for caution. I must get the new young priest up to bless my house.
Its so good you brought this up. We are in a post Chridtian world where pagan/evil practices have taken over. Its also extremely important to bless your food before you eat. Not just to thank God but to protect ourselves from anything attached to the food. This may seem paranoid but this is the world we are in now.
