Beyond Materialism

As Christians we know well that miracles are a reality. Jesus Christ worked many miracles while He was on earth. Miracles abound in the Old Testament too. When you think about it - it is a miracle that we exist, that God created us and that He sustains the existence of all things, animate and inanimate.

But the vast majority of scientists of all flavours do not believe in miracles or indeed in God. Looked at from their perspective, they only believe in materialist laws of physics, chemistry, statistics etc. I do find it hard blame them for their lack of faith, I rather have a kind of sympathy or empathy for their predicament as I was captured by the 'gravitational pull' of such mind-conditioning materialist, delusional ideology for many, many years. For me the difficulty lies in how to evangelise people such as this. Our Lord does seem to say that if the evangelisation is done 'properly' that those who repent and are baptised will have their sins forgiven, whereas those who do not believe will be condemned. But that concerns the whole challenging topic of how to evangelise.

Personally, I like hearing of the miraculous events associated with our Faith and I find that those of the Marian apparitions do strengthen my Faith although it does not rely on such.

In the face of witnessing a miracle, it often happens that the atheist will 'convert' to some form of spiritual belief, but for the hard-core atheist scientist there is no strenuous reevaluation to be done: by definition, the laws of science are LAWS which cannot be broken and ipso facto the apparently miraculuous event has 'without doubt' some kind of explanation which would reveal itself if sufficient scrutiny were afforded to it. Of course, there are usually 'more important' scientific matters pending which prevent any further scrutiny or reasoned attention being given to the miraculous event.

The following clip is a refreshing look at how science may be opening its outlook a little to acknowledge and study phenomena which are beyond the materialist laws of science. This man is a very intelligent, understanding, expressive, articulate, generous and at times humorous scientist who is studying what he describes as events in the 'extra-sensory perception' (ESP) category.

Although, he may be far from a Christian understanding of such things as miracles, it is most interesting to hear him discuss his work and views on this topic- and how other materialist scientists react to his work. I am thinking also of the Platonic Physics of Wolfgang Smith which DeGaulle has introduced on the forum, although I don't know if this gentleman is aware of Wolfgang's work. As DeGaulle has noted before, it does seem that Physics is in a crisis due to the frankly unworkable and unsatisfactory nature the theories of quantum mechanics, quantum gravity and string theory in describing reality. Maybe this crisis will help to open up science to a recognition the existence of God, our Creator? However, I suspect Science would need an extremely radical overhaul to be compatible with Spirit of God. Our Lord did say that He would ask the Father to send the Paraclete to be with us always; "the Spirit of Truth, whom the world cannot accept, since it neither sees Him nor recognises Him."

Science never ceases to prove the existence of God :notworthy:
