I found this post and am bumping it up as an alternative to other big book sites as we approach Christmas. I am still looking for recommendations of good reads for a young adult who has a penchant for fantasy-type books. She loved Tolkien's LOTR, but there aren't many other books in that genre that are as good. Padraig recommended a series by Robert Jordan, the Wheels of Time (it was part of past readings) in another thread that I can't find now, but I would still love more recommendations in the fantasy genre, or others - maybe mystery books that aren't too bad? It's hard to find much in person now. Most if not all books on display in bookstores have occult themes and in most stores, they don't carry many of the old classics anymore!

I really enjoyed the Mistborn Trilogy by Brandon Sanderson. He was also the writer chosen to complete the Wheel of Time books. He’s a Mormon and his books do have a moral compass.
Rachel Starr Thomson is a Christian writer who has produced some nice things, really for young adults but I did enjoy her ‘Oneness’ series which is suffused with faith. The first volume is called 'Exile'. She’s not a writer of great stature but she’s easy reading and I have a lot of her stuff on my Kindle. There are two trilogies about the endtimes by Catholic writers, both really good. Kenneth Nowell's Trials and Triumph trilogy and Bud Macfarlane's Pierced by a Sword, Conceived without Sin and House of Gold. I've reread both of these trilogies. OK not strictly fantasy but worth a punt. Lord of the World by Robert Hugh Benson is, of course, still masterful after over 100 years. David Gemmell wrote a lot of fantasy. His books are very much plot rather than character driven and so can be a bit thin at times. However I absolutely loved Sword in the Storm and the two following which are fantasy but closely mirror Britain in the Roman era. I can remember thinking that I wish I'd written them! He did have faith and it's reflected in his writing.
These are good suggestions. FRank Peretti's This Present Darkness is interesting. He is evangelical so he can't resist anti Catholic attitudes. But the "Darkness" books are good. Can't remember the title of the second one. They prominently feature angels.
Brandon Sanderson’s Stormlight Series is also very good. daniel Abraham - the coin and dagger series is also very good
Thank you everyone for these great recommendations, I looked them all up and have found some books that I think will be appreciated! As long as there is a moral compass to the stories and ideally, a correct tie with our faith, that is the sort of thing I am looking for. I would prefer to give a book of real spiritual literature, but she says she's not interested. I also found this thread in the forums here where there are other recommendations. In the video of Taylor Marshall's top 5 picks, I was surprised that he puts Dracula in there, but I won't be buying that anytime soon, I think it would send this person towards books like Twilight...
