Looking at those figures, it strikes me that the relatives of those who have died of the regular 'flu might have grounds for a mass-action case against the authorities for negligence. Why weren't precautions of at least as thorough a nature taken to protect them against what appears to be a more virulent disease?

  4. HUGE BREAKING NEWS: President Trump Announces Chloroquine Will Be Made Available IMMEDIATELY ! – Has Shown “Very, Very Encouraging Early Results” (VIDEO)

    BREAKING NEWS—
President Trump announced on Thursday the US will IMMEDIATELY make the drug Chloroquine available to treat US coronavirus patients!

President Trump made the announcement at the daily Coronavirus press conference in the White House. The president added that chloroquine has shown, “very, very encouraging results” in treating the coronavirus!

New York Governor Cuomo has agreed to start using the drug in his state immediately!

On Monday Dr. Anthony Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, announced that the first trial vaccine for the coronavirus is now being tested. The trial taking place in Seattle, which has been a hotbed for COVID-19. The test includes 45 people age 18-55 and they are receiving two injections, one at zero days, one at 28 days. The individuals will then be followed for one year. The trial results is still months away.

On Monday night Laura Ingraham reported that a new study revealed the anti-viral medication chloroquine is successful in fighting the coronavirus.

** An Effective Treatment for Coronavirus (COVID-19)

Laura invited Dr. Gregory Rigano, the co-author of the study to discuss the latest findings.

Dr. Rigano said their study found that those COVID-19 patients who took hydroxy-chloroquine were found free of the disease in 6 days. The patients were testing negative for the coronavirus in six days!

Dr. Rigano also said taking choroquine could act as a preventative.

    This is a remarkable study!

Last night on Tucker Carlson’s show on FOX News, Dr. Rigano, discussed the latest findings where the test patients had 100% cure.

This is great news and President Trump has the ability to move it forward. The drug also has been around for decades. Maybe this is the big news President Trump is reporting today?

Saw this on TV a moment ago. :)

If it also doubles as a vaccine, I will defer, as I work in our home and have no children, can stay cooped up for weeks.

"Mine" can to go someone who truly needs it.

    Husband's choice, if made available.

    Perspective for Italy

The 3400 death toll for Italy sounds really concerning but how does that compare to seasonal winter flu in Italy. Fortunately they just studied this very thing. Don't let the years listed confuse you, this represents 3 seasons, not 5.

The quick stat to note is this…..How many died from the flu per season in this recent study of 3 winter seasons? 22,667! How many of these people that die every year are now put in this scary new, much smaller number of 3400?

Why didn’t everyone freak out last year? Or the year before? Or the year before that? This only reason is because this is a new strain. There is no other reason. This isn’t to downplay things but lets not loose our logic and reason in the process.

    Highlights

In the winter seasons from 2013/14 to 2016/17, an estimated average of 5,290,000 ILI cases occurred in Italy, corresponding to an incidence of 9%.

More than 68,000 deaths attributable to flu epidemics were estimated in the study period.

Italy showed a higher influenza attributable excess mortality compared to other European countries. especially in the elderly.

    Abstract

    Objectives

In recent years, Italy has been registering peaks in death rates, particularly among the elderly during the winter season. Influenza epidemics have been indicated as one of the potential determinants of such an excess. The objective of our study was to estimate the influenza-attributable contribution to excess mortality during the influenza seasons from 2013/14 to 2016/17 in Italy.

    Methods

We used the EuroMomo and the FluMomo methods to estimate the annual trend of influenza-attributable excess death rate by age group. Population data were provided by the National Institute of Statistics, data on influenza like illness and confirmed influenza cases were provided by the National Institutes of Health. As an indicator of weekly influenza activity (IA) we adopted the Goldstein index, which is the product of the percentage of patients seen with influenza-like illness (ILI) and percentage of influenza-positive specimens, in a given week.

    Results

We estimated excess deaths of 7,027, 20,259, 15,801 and 24,981 attributable to influenza epidemics in the 2013/14, 2014/15, 2015/16 and 2016/17, respectively, using the Goldstein index. The average annual mortality excess rate per 100,000 ranged from 11.6 to 41.2 with most of the influenza-associated deaths per year registered among the elderly. However children less than 5 years old also reported a relevant influenza attributable excess death rate in the 2014/15 and 2016/17 seasons (1.05/100,000 and 1.54/100,000 respectively).

    Conclusions

Over 68,000 deaths were attributable to influenza epidemics in the study period. The observed excess of deaths is not completely unexpected, given the high number of fragile very old subjects living in Italy. In conclusion, the unpredictability of the influenza virus continues to present a major challenge to health professionals and policy makers. Nonetheless, vaccination remains the most effective means for reducing the burden of influenza, and efforts to increase vaccine coverage and the introduction of new vaccine strategies (such as vaccinating healthy children) should be considered to reduce the influenza attributable excess mortality experienced in Italy and in Europe in the last seasons.
