An update on commodity prices for you all: Live cattle prices in last week are currently up 3.74% Pork prices are up 16.72% Chicken prices are up 5.40% S&P Packaged meat index is up 14.1% since March 19 All Agriculture commodities index is up 3.48% Corn is up 1.7% Sugar is up 12.05% Coffee is down 0.94% I like to look at prices to see what the future holds. These are pretty large increases in the near term for commodities suggesting indeed a shortage may be coming. Market prices are usually several months in advance of what will actually occur. I agree its not a bad time right now to fill your freezers if you have the means too. I noticed several local stores are beginning to limit meat purchases on chicken and ground beef.
Thank you Andy3. I don't look at these and so it lends credence to what I have been hearing. People are still hoarding paper products, most especially tp. Odd that this item is mostly gone from the shelves and are still limited. Locally even water is back and not limited but paper products still are.
Our Sams club was completely out of all fresh pork and all beef except pricey tenderloin. The only chicken left was bone in thighs. The meat packing plants are having a hard time adjusting to social distancing and people are hoarding.
It's not good. It's the same here. I'm on my way to a local farmer today to pick up some beef. I'm grateful he has it available.
Fortunately we have good well water and also a water service. So far so good although who knows what the future brings....
Thanks for this info Andy. I just came back from the market, and the meat counter was pretty sparce. No frozen vegetables, or pasta either. In my area prices have really shot up on many products. Cans of tuna that used to be 10 for $10.0o are now $2.19 per can. I've also noticed paper towels, and toilet paper are now only available in giant sized packages. I feel bad for the many people who are barely getting by, and they are forced to spend $2o for a package of toilet paper. Clorox/Lysol wipes are also non existent at our stores. Our local Trader Joe's has been pretty well stocked, but the lines to get in this store are ridiculously long.
Thanks for the heads up. After 2 p.m. online Mass today I think I will head into town and get some canned meat products. That doesn't require refrigeration in case the power goes out and my fridge freezer goes out. Don't want it stocked with frozen foods. We just got an alert that hurricane season is almost upon us, so we never know. But canned meat keeps for a long time. Just sayin. But I do see food prices going sky high this summer.
