    6:23 PM 5/2/2015 — FIRST SATURDAY
    [At the Talk.]
It was December 10th, 1925. I was in my room, when suddenly the room lit up and it was the light of my dear Mother in Heaven who came with the Child Jesus on a luminous cloud. Our Lady, as if wanting to instill courage, rested her hand on my shoulder, and as she did so, showed me her Immaculate Heart encircled by thorns which she was holding in her other hand. The Child Jesus said: “Have compassion on the Heart of your most holy Mother, covered with thorns, with which ungrateful men pierce it at every moment, and there is no one to make an act of reparation to remove them.”
Then Our Lady said: “Look, my daughter, at my Heart surrounded with thorns with which ungrateful men pierce me every moment by their blasphemies and ingratitude. You at least try to console me and say that I promise to assist at the hour of death, with all the graces necessary for salvation, all those who on the first Saturday of five consecutive months, shall confess, receive Holy Communion, recite one decade of the Rosary, and keep me company for fifteen minutes while meditating on the mysteries of the Rosary, with the intention of making reparation to me.”
After this grace, how could I take myself away from the least sacrifice that God asks of me to console the Heart of my beloved Mother in Heaven, happy that Mary depletes the bitter drops of the Chalice.**

Now, if you know anything at all about the life of Sister Lucia and the devotion of keeping the First Five consecutive Saturdays of the month, you will know that quote; but, given that this is the first time, here at the Shrine, that we're observing these First Five Saturdays in a major way, we should presume nothing.
When Lucia was granted this particular vision, she had just entered the convent of the Dorothean Sisters at Pontevedra, Spain; she was not yet a Carmelite—that wouldn't happen until much later—and, being the last survivor of the three children to have seen the Mother of God at Fatima, she was already a famous person; so, her identity was hidden behind a religious name: she was known as Sister Maria das Dores. This was totally proper: in many religious communities even today, it's common for someone entering the convent or monastery to take a new name to signify the complete change of life that consecrating oneself to God requires; in Lucia's case, it served a double purpose, as it allowed her to settle into her new life without being distracted by the attention her baptismal name would have caused.
The Dorothean Sisters were a quiet and reserved community of nuns, not well known, not very large; the convent at Pontevedra was off the beaten track, the perfect place for Sister Maria das Dores to pray and reflect on the great things the Mother of God had said and shown to her and her two cousins at Fatima; so, it was the perfect place for the Mother of God to visit her again, and give her the mandate which is our reason for gathering here today: to entrust her with the task of transmitting to the world Her request for what we know today as the devotion of the First Five Saturdays

    First Saturday

Why is that significant? Because Saturday was, at the time Sister Maria was given this mandate, already a day the Church had set aside for prayer to the Mother of God. It had been for centuries, and was formally confirmed as such by Pope Saint Pius X in a decree he issued in 1905, in which he offered several indulgences for doing so, long before Mary ever appeared at Fatima. And the reason that's significant is because it reminds us that everything Mary has told us through her servant Lucia was said always in obedience to—and under the authority of—Christ's Holy Church. Some of us sometimes forget that. Sometimes we imagine that the veneration of the Mother of God and the messages of Our Lady of Fatima constitute some sort of religion unto themselves, with the Church being an entity of officialdom which we judge as worthy or unworthy of our Lady's favor to the degree that the Church conforms herself to what Mary says. And there have always been, and will always be, agitating people who will insist on passing judgment on the Church based on what they think Mary said. How many of us have heard it said, for example, that the consecration of Russia to the Immaculate Heart of Mary was not done by Pope Saint John Paul II the way Mary required, because he didn't mention Russia by name? What a stupid argument that is. It's also an argument that I regard as seriously sinful: the Church, according to the Blessed Apostle Paul, is the Body of Christ, which is the same thing as saying the Church is Jesus. To disobey the Church is to be an enemy of Jesus and Mary. I'll repeat that, just so there's no mistake: to disobey the Church is to be an enemy of Jesus and Mary.

Cardinal archbishop of Aparecida presides over the anniversary international pilgrimage to Fatima in May 2015.

His Excellency Raymundo Damasceno Assis, cardinal archbishop of Aparecida, presides at the anniversary international pilgrimage to Fatima in May 2015. In this occasion, just at the opening of the pilgrimage, will be enthroned in the Shrine of Fatima an image of Our Lady of Aparecida. In an interview held in March, this year, Bishop Raymundo Assis ponders over the Fatima-Aparecida connection, and also about his coming to the Cova da Iria.

Fatima has the dimensions of the world

In an interview held in March, this year, Bishop Raymundo Assis ponders over the Fatima-Aparecida connection, and also about his coming to the Cova da Iria.

    Interview by Leopoldina Simões

How is being experienced and met with the preparation for the enthronement of the image of Our Lady of the Conception of Aparecidain Fatima?

The image of Our Lady of Aparecida, staying among us, hands clasped in prayer, through nearly 300 years, became very dear to the Brazilian people, since its blessed discovery in the waters of the Paraíba do Sul river. It’s a providential occurrence that also Fatima celebrates, at the same time, its centenary jubilee. Thus, it is an unexpected grace to have a replica of the image of Mother Aparecida officially enthroned at the Shrine of Our Lady of Fatima. We are happy and strengthened with her presence in our lives. And we presage that such an enthronement at Fatima will redound in "appearance" and disclosure, in its irruption into the hearts and lives of so many brothers and sisters of ours. In the manifold and varied provenance of its pilgrims, Fatima has the dimensions of the world. May this Image in Fatima stretch out in all directions, and to the last frontiers of the earth, the magnitude of the "network" of human hearts to which Our Lady wants bring light to open the way for Her and our only Saviour, Jesus Christ!

Are the history and message of Fatima known to the Brazilian people?

At least in most significant points, the history and message of Fatima are known and familiar to the Brazilian people. The Virgin, here, or as Our Lady of the Conception of Aparecida, calls her sons and daughters to prayer. In the two places, she appears with hands in supplication, but in association with penance. So she seems to be disposed to welcome us next to herself, but aims at something deeper. Being near to her means to discover or rediscover God or strengthen these vital ties with Him. She welcomes us, but since her heart is centered on God through prayer, actually we are led by Her to God. And once converted to Him, to His fatherly heart, let us come back, renewed, to our brothers, in order to build, together with them, a world of brotherhood, justice, peace, in the light of the gospel.

As a message to the world, what is the main core of the spirituality commonly experienced and fostered both in Fatima and Aparecida?

As a sign that "appears" in heaven, or sent and aimed at us by heaven, either Fatima or Aparecida uncovers the divine predilection for the little ones of this world, on which you can count (Mt 11.25-26). In Fatima, she calls three poor little shepherds and "appears" to them. In Aparecida, three fishermen, equally poor, find her image entangled in the meshes and, in this way, she manifests herself to those hearts and lives, duly ready and alert. In both images, the Virgin Mary, with hands clasped in prayer, tells us that the spiritual attitude of supplication guides us towards God, because He alone can satisfy us fully. And Aparecida, as an image of a pregnant mother, once again shows us that she, and all of us, her sons and daughters, must follow and imitate Jesus, the Son and Saviour who, on the strength of the Spirit, leads us to the Father.

What message will you bring to Fatima on May 12 and 13?

We wish the pilgrims, coming from all sides of the earth and representing the whole world, to taste the maternal and cheerful welcome of this unique Mother of each and every one of them. We wish that, under the radiance of these two different Images, representative of two nations, Portugal and Brazil feel associated in a fraternal way in virtue of the same mother; and that both nations represent the whole of humanity, for Mary received all human beings as her children from the lips of her dying Son on the cross. We wish that Fatima and Aparecida strengthen and scatter to the four winds the universal dimension of her message and proposal. She has a strong desire to be mother and sister of humanity, disciple-model in the following and imitation of the Redeemer! She wants to fulfill her unique mission: to bring God from heaven and make Him happen and disclose himself in the hearts and lives of all of us humans! Besides, she wants make of us, her pilgrims, true missionary disciples and carriers of this very experience to our national places and communities!

    • The Angel of Portugal

    • However, it was in the spring of the previous year, 1916, that the children had their first joint supernatural encounter as a means of preparing them for their meetings with Mary. As they were looking after the sheep one day they saw a dazzlingly beautiful young man, seemingly made of light, who told them he was the Angel of Peace. He invited them to pray with him.

    • Later on in the summer, the Angel again appeared to the children and encouraged them to pray and make sacrifices as a way of drawing down peace on their country.

In the autumn the children again saw the Angel as they were out looking after the sheep. He appeared before them holding a chalice in his hands above which was suspended a host from which drops of blood were falling into the chalice. The Angel left the chalice suspended in the air and prostrated himself before it in prayer.

He then gave the host to Lucia to eat, and let Francisco and Jacinta drink from the chalice while saying: “Take and drink the Body and Blood of Jesus Christ, horribly outraged by ungrateful men. Repair their crimes and console your God.” Then he prostrated himself again in prayer before disappearing. The children did not tell anyone about these visits of the Angel, feeling an interior necessity to keep quiet about these events.

The following account is based on the booklet, “Lucia Speaks – The Message of Fatima,” – a condensed version of Sister Lucia’s Memoirs – published by The World Apostolate of Fatima-USA.

During World War I Pope Benedict XV made repeated but forlorn pleas for peace, and finally in May 1917, made a direct appeal to Mary to intercede for peace in the world. The response was Mary’s first appearance at Fatima just over a week later. At this time Fatima was just a small village about seventy miles north of Lisbon. The three children to whom she appeared were Lucia dos Santos, age 10, and her cousins Francisco and Jacinta Marto, brother and sister, ages eight and seven respectively.

AMATO-FATIMA May-8-2015 (860 words) xxxiFatima 'lifts veil' on evil, Christian persecution, says cardinal By Laura IeraciCatholic News Service

VATICAN CITY (CNS) -- The so-called "secrets" of Our Lady of Fatima tell of today's Christian persecution, in addition to the martyrdom of the past century, said Cardinal Angelo Amato.
The prefect of the Congregation for Saints' Causes opened a conference May 7 on "The Message of Fatima between Charism and Prophecy." The text of his talk was published May 8 on the website of the Vatican newspaper, L'Osservatore Romano.

Cardinal Amato said he had "the privilege" of reading the original manuscripts of the secrets of Fatima when he served as secretary of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith from 2002 to 2008.
"I meditated on them at length because they cast a light of faith and hope on the very sad events of the past century, but not only," he said.
Despite popular hopes that the 20th century would be a time of reason and brotherhood, "it was in fact a tragic period for Christianity," he said.
Besides the two world wars, he said, "most tragic" incidents of Christian persecution occurred, including "the Armenian genocide, the Mexican repression, the Spanish persecution, the Nazi massacres, the communist extermination and, in this first part of the third millennium, Islamist persecution."
"There are millions of victims of evil ideologies, which generated conflicts and continue to generate conflicts, hatred and division," he added.
"As Pope Francis often repeats, the church today is a church of martyrs, of those Christians who, defenseless, are killed daily out of hatred for their unshakeable faith in our Lord, Jesus Christ," he continued. "The message of Fatima, in a visionary way, evokes this tragedy, lifting the veil on concrete historical events," where the devil "opposes God's benevolence" and "continues to tempt" the church, just as he tempted Jesus, "instilling in men's hearts feelings of enmity and death," he said.
Cardinal Amato described the Fatima message, with its concrete allusions to war, division and tragedies, as "without a doubt the most prophetic of modern apparitions."

Third Apparition of the Angel and the Divine Mercy Chaplet connection

Lucia is uncertain when the third apparition of the angel occurred, sometime in late September or in October 1916 is her recollection.

After we had repeated this prayer I don't know how many time we saw the shining over us a strange light. We lifted our heads to see what was happening. the Angel was holding in his left hand a chalice and over it, in the air, was a host from which drops of blood fell into the chalice. The Angel leaves the chalice in the air, kneels near us and tells us to repeat three times:

Most Holy Trinity, Father, Son and Holy Spirit, I adore You profoundly, and I offer You the Most Precious Body, Blood, Soul and Divinity of Jesus Christ, present in all the tabernacles of the world, in reparation for the outrages, sacrileges and indifferences by which He is offended. And by the infinite merits of His most Sacred Heart and the Immaculate Heart of Mary, I beg the conversion of poor sinners.

19 years later on the anniversary of the Fifth apparition of our Lady of Fatima September 13th 1935
St Faustina has a vision of an Angel about to unleash Gods wrath on Earth, and heres these words

    Friday, September 13, 1935.

In the evening, when I was in my cell, I saw an Angel, the executor of divine wrath. He was clothed in a dazzling robe, his face gloriously bright, a cloud beneath his feet. From the cloud, bolts of thunder and flashes of lightning were springing into his hands; and from his hand they were going forth, and only then were they striking the earth. When I saw this sign of divine wrath which was about to strike the earth, and in particular a certain place, which for good reasons I cannot name, I began to implore the Angel to hold off for a few moments, and the world would do penance. But my plea was a mere nothing in the face of the divine anger. (...) At that very moment I felt in my soul the power of Jesus' grace, which dwells in my soul. When I became conscious of this grace, I was instantly snatched up before the Throne of God. (...)
I found myself pleading with God for the world with words heard interiorly.
As I was praying in this manner, I saw the Angel's helplessness: he could not carry out the just punishment which was rightly due for sins. Never before had I prayed with such inner power as I did then.

The words with which I entreated God are these: Eternal Father, I offer You the Body and Blood, Soul and Divinity of Your dearly beloved Son, Our Lord Jesus Christ for our sins and those of the whole world; for the sake of His sorrowful Passion, have mercy on us. (Diary, 474-475)

Huge connection between Fatima and Divine Mercy...this came to me after reading a newsletter about the 100th anniversary of the Angel of Portugal coming up March 2016 and the day before reading Faustinas message.

I was struck by both had an Angel sent by the Lord and similar prayers we are asked to say...

    FIRST SATURDAY BULLETIN

    June, 2015

Sister Lucia, in her conversations with the Lord about the First Saturday Devotion, asked about those who cannot go to confession on that Saturday, would He permit that a confession within 8 days be valid?
"Jesus replied, 'Yes, and it can be longer provided that when they receive Me on the first Saturday they are in a state of grace and have the intention of making reparation to the Immaculate Heart of Mary.' He added, if they forgot to make the intention, they could do so at their next confession.
Lucia felt a mixture of indescribable happiness and stinging pain. Seeing God so offended she wanted...'to suffer all the torments to repair the Immaculate Heart of Mary, my dear Mother, and one by one take from her all the thorns that lacerate it. I understand that these thorns are the symbol of the numerous sins that go against the Son, crossing the heart of His Mother. Yes, because of them, many children are lost forever.'"
(My Pathway - Sister Lucia's private notes)

On Saturday, June 6, 2015 First Saturday Devotion at the National Blue Army Shrine will be broadcast live commencing at 11:00 AM Eastern Time with a talk given by Father Ronan Murphy. The broadcast will conclude at the end of the noon Mass.

Julia Immaculate Heart of Mary, pray for us.

WOW. I have just found this thread today.

I joined Universal Living Rosary about 3 or so years ago they are PO Box 1303, Dickinson, TX 77539 USA.

I have been allocated the 4th Sorrowful Mystery as my dedicated daily decade. I understand there are millions of members universally.

I had tried to join a Fatima Rosary crusade and the one I found on line were sending me information which indicated to me that it was the Traditionalists Latin Catholic type. I have no problem with Traditional Catholic; but was not happy with articles about how the Consecration was not done properly. And I did not feel happy with that. Then on finding the ULR, have been happy ever since, and they have a representative here in the UK. :)

Wish I had found this thread sooner, 3 years sooner. But I don't want to desert the ULR. Who knows, maybe could become a member of both.

Saturday, July 4 is not only a celebration of our nation's independence, but a First Saturday--a day that Our Lady asked us to make reparation to her Immaculate Heart for the salvation of souls. Given the many attacks on marriage, the family, life and religious freedom, it is good to remember that our prayers and penances can make a difference. The article below reminds us of how very important the Message of Fatima is today.

First Saturday Bulletin - Are you doing what our Lady asked? ‏

After the request for the First Saturdays Communion of Reparation was made by Our Lady on December 10, 1925, Sister Lucia had several apparitions and mystical experiences with the Lord. On one occasion on the night of May 29-30, 1930 while speaking with the Lord in the Most Blessed Sacrament about the devotion, she "suddenly felt possessed more intimately by the Divine Presence; and...the following was revealed to me: 'Daughter, the motive is simple. There are five kinds of offenses and blasphemies (1) against her Immaculate Conception; (2) against her perpetual virginity; (3) against her divine maternity, refusing at the same time to accept her as the Mother of mankind; (4) by those who try publicly to implant in the hearts of children an indifference, contempt, and even hate for this Immaculate Mother; and (5) for those who insult her directly in her sacred images.'"
Our Lord ended this communication by telling Sister Lucia that it was his own mother who asked for these acts of reparation in order to move him to "forgive those souls who have the misfortune of offending her."
Sister Lucia expressed her concern in a letter that this devotion was not being faithfully carried out. She believed Our Lady's promise that souls could be saved and war averted if the Five First Saturdays Devotion was spread and practiced. "We see her putting off this chastisement in the measure that efforts are being made to spread it. But I am afraid that we are not doing all that we are able to, and that God, in no way satisfied, may raise the arm of His mercy and let the world be ravaged by this punishment, which will be as never has been, horrible, horrible!"
She also wrote that "peace or war depends on the [Five First Saturdays devotion] along with the Consecration." (Fatima for Today, pgs. 156-158).
The Consecration was fulfilled by the Holy Father; the rest of the church is asked to fulfill the request for the First Saturdays Communion of Reparation. Please join in our Centennial Gift for Our Lady and make the pledge to begin practicing this devotion. Our world is full of wars and rumors of wars. The peace of the world was entrusted to the Immaculate Heart of Mary. Let us join with her in doing our part.
