THIS DAY IN GARABANDAL HISTORY JUNE 19, 1961 The next day the young girls went back to at the same time, and the same spot to wait for the angel. They recited the rosary at the calleja, but he did not show up. At 10:00pm, while the girls were beginning their evening prayers, each one heard in HER OWN ROOM, A VOICE SAYING “ YOU WILL SEE ME AGAIN “. JUNE 19,1962 - The girls are given a vision the future possible “ Chastisement “. This was the first of two nights they witnessed this terror, which later became known as the “night of screams”. THIS DAY IN GARABANDAL HISTORY June 20,1962 This is the second night in a row that the girls experience the foreshadowing of the future possible “ Chastisement”,” KNOWN AS THE NIGHT OF SCREAMS" .They all raise their hands as to push away the vision. The terror is so great, they are heard to say “ Oh please let the children die before this happens”. This event so terrifies the entire village, that the entire village goes to confession and communion the next day ! The Chastisement is a result of the hardness of heart and the refusal to repent. I believe it is possible for someone to be blind to the fact that a certain action is despicable in the eyes of God, but a dead conscience is produced by the refusal to repent of those choices we know are evil. Lord have Mercy! Just thinking out loud!
This is the great grace: to see our souls as God sees them! Everyone in the world will then be able to turn to Christ and repent!
THIS DAY IN GARABANDAL HISTORY JUNE 21, 1961 The day starts out with the entire village going to confession and communion , from the previous evenings “night of screams” visions of the Chastisement. This is the second appearance of St. Michael , and the first ecstasy observed by witnesses. The girls describe him in detail. From the book The Village Speaks - “ In the afternoon, the angel appears at the “calleja”…He wears a long blue robe, without a belt, and has large pink wings, clear and beautiful. His face is neither long nor round. He has a very nice nose, black eyes and a dark complexion. His hands are very delicate and his nails are cut. His feet are not visible. He appears to be about nine years old. Although he looks so young, he gives the impression of invincible strength. From : “The Village Speaks” page 16
THIS DAY IN GARABANDAL HISTORY JUNE 22, 1961 At approximately 8:30pm in the “calleja”, in the presence of Fr. Valentin Marichalar, who is the Pastor of Cosio (a neighboring town to Garabandal) , the four girls fall into ecstasy and see the angel again. The first medical tests determine that the children while in trance are insensitive to pain ! The “Commission “ doctors,in trying to discredit the girls claim of being in the presence of our Lady (while in ecstasy ) , put the girls through a number of seemly torturous tests, yet they were unharmed. For example, when pinching and poking the girls got no reaction, they resorted to sticking them with pins and needles, trying to see if a lighted match would burn them, throwing sand in their eyes, to try and make them blink or react. Flashing camera bulbs in their eyes to try and make them blink, or trying to pick them up and drop them on their knees, but 2 men couldn’t pick them up. These events only convinced the onlookers and the Doctors, of the apparitions authenticity ! From : “ The Village Speaks”, page 16
TODAY IN GARABANDAL HISTORY June 23 ,1962 A LETTER FROM MARI LOLI & JACINTA "The Virgin has told us that the world continues the same, that it has not changed at all, that few will see God. There are so few that it causes the Virgin much sorrow that it does not change. The Virgin has told us that the chastisement is coming; [as] the world is not changing, the cup is filling up. How sad the Virgin was! Although she did not let us see it, because the Virgin loves us [so much] and she suffers alone, since she is so good. Be good, everyone so that the Virgin will be happy. She has told us that we who are good should pray for those who are bad; we should pray to God for the world, for those who do not know Him. Be good, [be] very good." TODAY IN GARABANDAL HISTORY JUNE 24,1961 In the afternoon, St. Michael appears to the children in the “calleja”. At his feet is an inscription on a plaque made up of letters and some Roman numerals, … ” XVIII- MCMLXI“. The Visionaries do not understand the meaning of the inscription ( it is the future DATE the FIRST MESSAGE from Mary was to be made known, on October 18,1961 ) "GARABANDAL" book, by J. Serre, page 36
TODAY IN GARABANDAL HISTORY JUNE 25,1961 “The Cuadro” The young men of the Village set up this rectangular enclosure made of tree trunks and stakes so that the Visionaries might be better protected from the crowd. The only ones authorized to go in were the parents of the children, their brothers, the priests and physicians, who came to examine the girls while in ecstasy. “GARABANDAL ‘’ by J. Serre, pg. 37
SAINT JOSE MARIA ESCRIVA AND GARABANDAL His feast day today June 26 . The link between St Josemaría Escrivá de Balaguer with the Garabandal apparitions is not well known. In the summer of 1962 he spent a few days on holiday in Suances, Cantabria, during which he visited Garabandal, accompanied by several young men , probably members of Opus Dei. He spoke cheerfully and profoundly to the girls, an experience they still recall fondly after all these years. The visit was not unusual since at that time, and up until the Official Note of the Bishop of Santander of 7 October 1962, many priests visited Garabandal. As it happens, news of this visit came out by chance years later when somebody showed the girls a prayer picture for God’s favour through his intercession, printed during his canonization. It was then that the girls joyfully recounted the meeting. He would not have risked his reputation if he did not believe in the apparitions, and tell others about his trips to talk to the girls. This was also confirmed by Mother Nieves. Mother Maria de las Nieves García affirms that one of the seers (Mari Cruz) confirms the presence of the founder of Opus Dei in the town during the apparitions: Mari Cruz personally told Pueblo de María that the saint remembers him perfectly with his cassock, that he was very smiling, that he would go up with young students and that he would take out candies from the pocket of his cassock to distribute to the children present. Santiago Lanus affirms he visited Garabandal up to 3 times, expressing great interest in the phenomena” -“Garabandal,Message of Hope”, Fr.Luis Saavedra, page 245. “A Saint is a sinner who keeps trying”. - St. Escriva
THE REVERENT HORSE On Sunday June 27, 1993, a group of pilgrims from France praying the Rosary at the Pines of Garabandal, were surprised by a horse that appeared on the scene. But the most remarkable thing was that this horse stood reverently next to the main Pine that has the image of Our Lady mounted on it. During the Rosary, the horse, lowered its head, remained motionless throughout the length of the Rosary. When the rosary finished, he raised its head and began to walk away. Reported in the "Garabandal Journal" - Issue #28, 2020
Today in Garabandal History: June 28,1961 Praying to see St. Michael again. "We were a little sad because we had not seen the Angel. We went as usual to the school. When we got out, the people in the village, seeing us so sad, wept and kissed us, saying: - Pray so that he will return! When the evening came, we went to the Calleja and did as usual. The people prayed the rosary with more faith than ever so that the Angel would appear to us. And on finishing the litany, he appeared to us and came smiling more than ever. We asked him, why have you come? He smiled and did not answer us. We began to see him around nine and it ended at ten. It seemed to us a minute or less, because we were so happy with him .” (During the ecstasy, the time seems very short because of the intense happiness they experience. ) (From “Conchita's Diary” Chapter 2)
To me this makes more sense because of the 4 Popes locutions Conchita received. Leo falls outside of that.
TODAY IN GARABANDAL HISTORY JUNE 29, 1962 Dr. Ricardo Puncernau, Neuro-psychiatrist Dr. Ricardo Puncernau is the Vice-president of the Spanish Society of Sophrology and Psychosomatic Medicine and the President of the Spanish Association of Para-Psychological Investigations. “I have weighed, thought about, and consciously observed [the events], and I have made the following conclusion: In Garabandal, there has never existed nor exists any other acting causing factor in relation to what is happening there except the Most Holy Virgin.” Since I am Christian, I am obligated to strictly tell the truth, without adornment, at least in the essence of the narration. What is important, I dare to say, is the adornment of the story. At least consciously, I haven’t left out the slightest detail of what I remember. They are personal things, mine, as they relate to the history of Garabandal. They are things that I have never told before. Things that I believe are necessary to say. Next year, 1975, is the Holy Year. What better occasion to exhume events that were seemingly buried forever but, in reality, never were? It is evident that this has been written for those who already know the story of Garabandal. If not, I fear that they will neither understand nor value this testimony. Barcelona, December 1974. TODAY IN GARABANDAL HISTORY June 30, 1962 Don Luis Navas Carrillo, a lawyer from Palencia, witnessed two apparitions on Saturday night, June 30, 1962. The first one involved only Conchita and included prayer for the dead. Our Lady appeared to Conchita in the kitchen of her house during the early part of the night. Shortly after going into ecstasy, the child left her house, followed by a good number of people, both from the village and from outside the village. She walked through the streets and lanes reciting some decades of the rosary and singing others. She walked backwards in her ecstasy and this made a great impression on Don Luis. Shortly after this, Conchita went to Mari Cruz' house. Finding the door locked she knocked vigorously until it was opened. Then she mounted a steep stairway leading to the second floor where Mari Cruz and her family lived. She found her friend and placed the crucifix which she carried to her lips so that she could kiss it. Departing from Mari Cruz' house Conchita went to the cemetery, which is to the rear of the house and not too far away. She stopped for a while in front of the gate of the cemetery and then as she stood facing the tombs inside, she made a "solemn" sign of the cross. “NEEDLES” magazine Autumn 1976 Issue, pg. 9 by Fr. Joseph A. Pelletier
I had the privilege to pray for the Holy Souls buried in the graveyard at Garabandal, a place that the girls would regularly visit in ecstacy (you can see the gate of the cemetery in the top photo mentioned in Glenn's earlier post).
I prayed at the grave of Albrecht Weber who published four books on Garabandal and who died there in 2014.
TODAY IN GARABANDAL HISTORY: JULY 1 , 1961 SATURDAY, 1st OF JULY, 1961: THE ANGEL SPEAKS: HE ANNOUNCES THE "VISIT" OF "THE BLESSED VIRGIN OF MOUNT CARMEL" FOR THE NEXT DAY. At Garabandal, his manifestations were numerous. He is the one the little girls saw during the first nine days of the apparitions. He is the one who, later, often gave them the Eucharist; he again delivered the two famous Messages, etc. On this Saturday, 1st of July, St. Michael, for the first time, broke the silence in which the ecstasies had been unfolding until then: "Do you know why I have come?", he asked the children. -- No, they replied. "To tell you that tomorrow, Sunday, the Virgin Mary will appear to you under the title of "Our Lady of Mount Carmel." Then he asked the visionaries this other question: "Do you know what is written on the placard (escritorio)?" -- No!" The Blessed Virgin will tell you." Excerpted from "Garabandal" Book, J. Serre, page 41.
