I just read about this wonderful initiative on the Jesus Film Project site. They need donations to give more of these Light Their World lamps to refugees.

By the thousands, Iraqi and Syrian refugee families who have survived their trek over land and sea must now spend their nights in abandoned buildings, store fronts, garages, open spaces or tents. In camps without electricity, they often sit in darkness.

The Light Their World lamp allows refugee children to study and listen to the gospel with their families after sunset.

I would want to know a whole lot more about the people behind this project before making a financial contribution or promoting them on a Catholic website dedicated to the mother of God. For example, one of my questions would be: Are they a Protestant sect that denies the Immaculate Conception? Do they preach heresy such as sola scriptura and once saved, always saved?

Aid to the Church in need is a Catholic charity that aids the poor throughout the world, including Syrian refugees. They are always in need of donations http://www.churchinneed.org/site/PageServer?pagename=AU_Our_Mission

Seems that they are protestant from the links here, which includes a statement of faith and the bio of ministry leaders.

I usually donate through the French group called l'Aide à l'Église en Détresse, who are all over the world and do a lot to support christians in parts of the world who are not free. But when I saw the idea of a lamp bringing the light of Jesus to refugees in camps, I thought (think) that is a truly wonderful idea, especially since this was tied to the story of the refugees who saw Jesus while in a storm on the Agean sea.

As for the what goes on beyond the film with them, I don't know. I'll leave it to you & Padraig to decide to keep or delete this thread.

Their statement of faith suggests that they are Bible Alone, Once Saved Always Saved Protestants. They definitely don't believe in Purgatory and most likely would regard Catholics as "Mary/Idol Worshippers". I have no say in which threads are kept or deleted, and I understand your reasons for starting it. I made a donation to a non-Catholic charity (can't remember which one) without first checking it out and regretted it afterwards when I read some of their many follow up emails, so I'm just giving people a heads up.

I don't want to come across as being mean spirited or begrudging about them because they are helping people who are desperate, but Catholic charities like Caritas also help refugees across Europe. Aid to the Church in Need helps the poor and needy across the world.
