I think you are correct in this, AED.

Exactly. Deprecatory prayers ask for things in the Name of Jesus, that G_D deliver so-and-so from this illness or from this demonic obsession. Imprecatory prayers command that something be done, that the demon leave and cease its torment of a person.

Here's a blog entry from the Catholic Exorcism blog: Exorcist Diary #187: Exorcism is a Battle of Ownership These people I mentioned earlier were Protestants and did not have a complete understanding of the difference between what they were doing in deliverance (which involved deprecatory prayers) and what they wanted to do with the penitentiary (which involved using imprecatory prayers, commanding the demons to leave that place). Many protestants believe that Jesus gave them the authority and ability to cast out ALL demons, just because they are Christians. In truth, the early Church could do this because all of the apostles and many of the disciples were bishops, and had authority over the people where they were. (King Edward the Confessor (of England) was called "The Confessor" due to his piety and religious observance, and is the only English king to be declared a saint in the Catholic Church. He was also known as an exorcist, which he could do because his office of King gave him authority over all those who lived in his kingdom.)

The takeaway here is that when you walk into a store and find it has occult items in it, you can bless yourself as one belonging to G_D. Since you do not own any of the items in the store, nor the building, nor anything else there, any attempt to claim authority over those things could result in severe blowback onto you.

I got the same bad vibes once when we called into Glastonbury town in England to have a look around.

It was like static electricity of evil. We left immediately. It is a bad, bad place a centre of new age and occultic pagan practises.

Oh no! That sort of thinking gets people into trouble. The Holy Water would only be for me in private.

  8. Using holy water is different than saying prayers to cast out demons. Thank you for highlighting the possibility of retaliation by demons, but it is also important to realize that they are limited in their 'power.' I am reading Dominion by Fr. Ripperger and I just came across this passage, page 97. Demons are used as instruments to determinate effects. God has right of disposition in relation to them which indicates that as His instruments, they are slaves of God, albeit unwilling. Since He has use of them any way He wants, they are entirely at His disposal and command. Therefore, demons' usefulness to us is not out of their own wills, but divine ordination and command. It was noted above that demons cannot do anything without divine permission and we see how this flows from the fact that they are slaves of Christ. This ultimately means that demons cannot harm us or our property without Christ's consent. At times, people have the impression that the demons attack at will, and that it is really entirely up to the demon himself to determine when and where he attacks. When a demon attacks is entirely determined by God because of what God wants to achieve and that is the person's perfect reliance, and confidence in Him, rather than his won powers. In point of fact, the demons are on a very short leash, so to speak. They literally can do nothing without God's permission. This will be discussed in relationship to possession, where every single facet and iota of the possession is entirely determined by God...... Also, Muzhik, I like that out of respect, you do not type the word God in full because of the holiness of His NAME, however it is typed and spoken and proclaimed in Scripture in full and so I do the same.

Yes, using holy water is different than casting out demons. Holy water is a sacramental of the Church. Thank you for your info, WBTW.

Thank you for this. It's what I've been thinking while silently following this thread. I have a suspicion that there were other elements involved in the demonic retaliation against that Christian deliverance group, which opened them up to being harmed. It is true about authority being important, but I also think a humble and loving heart relying upon God's power and not oneself could probably safely pray against demons they don't have any authority over. I'm willing to bet it's pride that often gets people in trouble in these situations. But that's just my suspicion.

I personally would never address any demons directly but I don't think sprinkling holy water in a place one is hoping God will bring some light and grace into would be harmful. I could be wrong.

It is interesting that Fr. Ripperger teaches this. Since he has also shared that the moral corruption in society has freed up the demons to wreck more havoc among humanity, it must similarly mean that we as God's children, by our prayer and lives of holiness, restrain the devil also. :D(y)

Who do we have authority over? Every morning I bless my family children grandchildren husband and extended family and god children sometimes with Holy Water. Is this ok. I also use the prayer of sending Angels that someone posted a few months ago.

Rory, this sounds good to me. You are not driving out demons. You are blessing and praying and sending angels.
Sounds fine. I do the same.

Thank you although I have said “In the name of Jesus I cast you Satan from my family ,to the foot of the cross , where Mary is And I ask you Jesus to do with him as You wish. “ That is probably not correct.

So perhaps I should ask God to deliver —- my children only from —- and cover them with Your Precious Blood.

Well you have the authority over your children to do that but for others maybe ask Jesus to do it. ( deprecatory prayer)

It seems to me that blessings at meal, blessing of your household (children) and even concluding the divine office as a lay person is ok. I think the caution is the formula for how to say it is more along the lines of “bless us Lord”… not “I bless you”…..

I’m sure this is covered in CCC ….

This is certainly ground breaking and astonishing news on 2 grounds. First and foremost, the decision itself. But, second , unprecedented that a SCOTUS ruling was leaked. Likely to create political storm and unfortunately abject interference into Judicial branch. Another blow to the Republic.

I understand, we are still 2 months away from official/public release. So a lot can happen. But the decision itself if true is a sign that I hope Heaven sees as perhaps a first return back to God.
