I attended a retreat some years ago where our Retreat Master was a Sister. She did not wear the habit, wore regular clothing, but the thing that struck me was seeing her wearing earrings. I seem to recall they were kind of a dangling pair. That memory has always stayed with me.
Yes. That says it all. Compare to the wonderful Dominicans in habits that are on EWTN or the Sisters of Life. Or Sr Clare Crockett's order. Biiiiiig difference.
My whole childhood I was, thankfully, completely ignorant of the fact that there were nuns that didn't wear habits. My homeschool curriculum was filled with nothing but traditional pictures of nuns in floor-length habits, and the only nuns I visited as a child were the nearby discalced Carmelite nuns which were still in full habit. So when I met my first nun at age 20 that was not in a traditional habit, I was shocked. This nun actually was wearing some kind of habit, but the skirt was just past the knee, the top was a vest over a white blouse, and the veil was a little circle cap on top of her head. I felt she looked like a nurse, but not a nun. It was pretty confusing because I'd never seen or heard of nuns depicted this way. I honestly wasn't even aware until a few years ago that there were lots of nuns that completely ditched their habits and wore civilian clothing! I would have been so scandalized as a child to know that! My husband actually left me for a little while when we were dating, so that he could discern whether he had a calling to the religious life in the Dominican order. He was only there a few months and was scandalized, himself. They all owned a full habit but were only required to wear it when coming together for prayer and Mass. He was the only one who chose to wear his full time. And then when they went on a visit to another city, they had a day of recreation out on the town, including going to see a secular movie at the theater...and their superior actually forbade them to wear their habit in public! So there they all were at dinner and the movies, and walking around with tourists, and no one would have ever suspected it was a group of Dominican brothers! He was very disappointed by all of this. That was just over 10 years ago. I don't know if things have gotten better or worse since. But I do know that young people seeking vocations these days are attracted to the traditional orders. The worldly, lax orders are aging out, as are the very liberal churches.
Thank you for sharing your experiences. The Carmelite nuns do wear traditional habits. But I think it’s becoming very difficult for nuns to keep the old traditional ways of worship and keeping their rule. I’ve heard of a couple of instances where some traditional Carmelites have found it difficult to keep their ways.
I agree PF, praise Jesus our young people are attracted to traditional orders. I do see a glimmer of hope that there will be a resurgence of vocations. These worldly orders have weak foundations and will not stand the test of time. When I was a student it was truly surreal to watch the younger nuns, one by one make the transition to secular clothes. We held our breaths waiting to see which sister would be next to succumb. In my opinion this caused tremendous damage to vocations. The level of respect that we had for these sisters was forever altered. The older nuns, God bless them, held out and kept their full habits. It must have been a terrible trial for them.
So the pastoral care contract that has been in place is suddenly under review. The timing of the cease and desist order is suspicious. I hope this sad situation will be resolved.

Ok… let’s start with JP Morgan and Mr. Diamonds properties, then we can move to CEOs of the top 10 corporations. That should be a fantastic start.
