Yes, Pope Leo is a wonderful name choice. I was pleasantly surprised. I will pray to Pope Leo XIII for our Holy Father.
About this Cardinal, now Pope... I searched sites for info on him prior to the white smoke. He was being touted as the progressive wing's compromise candidate. Here is a snip from an article: former prefect of the influential Dicastery for Bishops since April 2023, is a Chicago-born prelate who spent many years as a missionary in Peru before being elected head of the Augustinians for two consecutive terms. Aged 69, he is closely aligned with Pope Francis’ vision regarding the late pope’s pastoral priorities, especially regarding environmentalism, outreach to the poor and migrants, and a pastoral approach that emphasizes meeting people where they are. He has publicly stated that bishops should not act as “little princes sitting in their kingdoms.” Cardinal Prevost's views on allowing divorced and civilly remarried Catholics to receive Holy Communion in certain cases are unknown. He showed mild support for the Vatican’s 2023 document Fiducia Supplicans stressing the role of bishops’ conferences in applying it. The Chicago-born cardinal has faced controversy related to handling of clergy sexual abuse cases, but has been defended in the face of the accusations. He is known for his discreet and thoughtful approach, and has been praised by peers for his attentive listening skills, ability to synthesize complex issues, and judicious questioning. Cardinal Prevost is being promoted as a possible compromise candidate if leading candidates are unable to obtain enough votes. His lengthy missionary service in Peru, first as a priest and later as a bishop over a total of 22 years, allows him to be seen more as an international candidate than an American one, which mitigates choosing a pope from a superpower in his case. However, he might be considered too young and too recently made a cardinal (2023) to be seriously considered papabile with any significant chance of being elected.
My thoughts, for whatever they're worth: I know nothing more about our new Holy Father than y'all do, but I'm a pretty good reader of faces/body language. When I watched him come out and greet the crowd, I had a very good feeling about him. He is sincere, with kind eyes. He looked emotional and shell-shocked, like he did not see this coming at all. He looked like he has a heart that God can work with, clay in the Potter's hands. He named himself Leo XIV. He became pope on St. Michael's feast day. He chose the traditional stole to wear. These are great signs. Signs that God is listening to our prayers, and may have some things in store that will surprise us all. During Pope Francis' pontificate, in spite of everything, we have seen huge turn-arounds in the Faith...Young people converting and coming back to Mass, young holy priests bringing beauty and reverence back into our churches... God knows exactly what He's doing and how to bring good out of anything. I choose to respect Pope Leo XIV, to pray for him with love and hope, and have confidence in the Holy Spirit. God knows what He is doing. I hope he canonizes Pope Leo XIII!
That is something sure to go down like a lead balloon. I know of nobody interested in such a vocation-killer.
I got good vibes from him too. Going to be praying very much for him and that he will reap great fruits for Jesus.
Perfectly said. My wife and i just decided we will go up to our Marian Shrine which has Adoration in what we affectionately call Thankful Thursday. Will be praying for Holy, Catholic , Apostolic Church, our new Pope and all your intentions. I also pray that no matter what we hear or read in these coming days, we give Pope Leo our charity and discernment as he starts his pontificate
Yes, I hope with all my heart that we can all be respectful toward our new pope and reserve judgment. Give God a chance to introduce him to us Himself!
Brian, I have the utmost respect for your opinions. We are at a fork in the road. This man, reputedly an enforcer of Pope Francis, has chosen as his name that which typifies some of the greatest popes in history, rather than insipidly and easily choosing to be 'Francis II'. He also adopted the appearance of tradition in his newly papal garb, in contrast with his 'humble' predecessor. There are two plausible options, in my opinion. Either we are faced with a threat far greater than the Bergoglian one, a brazenly gas-lighting Bergoglio with a brain (and the James Martin endorsement greatly worries me, from this point of view) or we are dealing with a man who has, in the genuine aweful experience of the Real and True Holy Ghost, gotten his act together and determined to be the Vicar of Our Lord, Jesus Christ. This man is either another sodomite or a Catholic (and guff about synods will not be the deciding factor). Time will (quickly) tell.
Never in my wildest dreams did I think there would be an American pope in my lifetime, I am beyond shocked. It remains to be seen what this papacy will bring to the table, but God has put Pope Leo here for reasons unknown to us.
I’ve said enough. Probably too much. I’m turning it all off for a while and working on my aircraft and flight training. See you all later. Hopefully.
He reads Moynihan! Another good sign. Robert recounts a brief conversation he had with the future Pope Leo XIV starting at around 7 hours and 25 minutes in his live coverage of the election: (that should start at about the right time - and it didn't - not sure how to paste at a specific time).
No. What you said was entirely necessary. I, myself, am better informed about this man than I was before I read your posts. You have brought me down to firmer ground. The Truth is not always what we hope or like it to be. We often need a cold shower or a slap in the face. Don't doubt that we are all ultimately singing from the same hymn-sheet as yourself. And you're the one proven to be the fast learner!
