Pope Francis said Wednesday that marriage is a vocation all believers are called to defend, specifically in terms of the complementarity of the union between a man and a woman.

Rather than being lived as a reciprocal union, marriage today has been marred by an “epidemic of distrust, of skepticism and even of hostility,” he said.

At the same time, the procreative aspect of marriage has been “devalued, which is always a great loss for everyone. How important it is to revalue marriage and the family!”

When a stable and “fruitful” union between a man and a woman is lacking or underappreciated, it is the young who suffer most, Francis observed.

maybe I'm reading you wrong, but are you "accusing" the Holy Father of supporting same sex marriage. I typically don't like to reply in this manner, but I'm uncomfortable with what seems like an unfair and untrue characterization of the Pope.

Pope says Catholic Church should not dismiss gay marriage
Pope Francissays the issue of gay marriage should be studied and not dismissed out-of-hand, a senior Roman Catholic cardinal has revealed.

Cardinal Timothy Dolan, the outspoken archbishop of New York, said Pope Francis had told him: “Rather than quickly condemn them, let's just ask the questions as to why that has appealed to certain people."

Archbishop Dolan stressed that the Pope had not shifted the Catholic Church’s position on same-sex unions.

"It wasn't as if he came out and approved them,” he told the NBC television network in the US.

But the Pope wanted senior Church leaders to “look into” the issue and to scrutinise the reasons why many countries have legalised same-sex marriages.

In an interview last week with Corriere della Sera, a leading Italian daily, the Pope stressed that the Church continued to regard marriage as being a union between a man and a woman.

But he did say that countries around the world were “normalising different arrangements of cohabitation” and that “we must consider different cases and evaluate each particular case.”

The Vatican immediately tried to play down his remarks, saying that: "We should not try to read more into the Pope’s words than what has been stated in very general terms."

Pope Francis has shown a softer, more inclusive stance on core issues of concern to the Catholic Church since being elected Pope on March 13 last year.

Last July, when asked about homosexual priests, he said: “If someone is gay and he searches for the Lord and has good will, who am I to judge?”

He added: “We shouldn't marginalise people for this. They must be integrated into society.”

His comments did not fundamentally change the policy of the Catholic Church, which holds that while homosexual orientation is not in itself sinful, homosexual acts are “intrinsically disordered”.

But they signalled that Francis accepts that some priests are gay, and that it is acceptable as long as they adhere to their vow of celibacy, marking a more compassionate stance on the issue.

The Pope’s attitude towards homosexuality has won him plaudits and earned him a place on the cover of The Advocate, a gay news magazine.

Conservative Catholics, particularly in the United States, have been alarmed by some of his comments, but Archbishop Dolan played down the idea of any backlash by traditionalists.

"I haven't sensed too much bristling among the conservatives," he said. "They honestly will say, 'His style is a little different and might periodically cause us a little angst.'

"But in general they too seem to be rejoicing in what you might call the evangelical fervour, the good interest in the life of the Church."

 

Brothers and sisters - why would any of us depend on getting the truth about anything from secular or agenda-driven news sources?

I'm very concerned that good Catholics will be swept away from the safety of the Church through the deceptive tactics of the enemy.

Where Peter is, there is the Church! Abandon Peter, and abandon the Church.

 

Is Cardinal Dolan a secular or agenda driven source? (Some would say yes.)

 

I'm doing the best I can to remain charitable in my comments here and this is the last time I will post on this thread as it's stealing my peace. I'm growing weary of what I perceive as these passive aggressive comments on the Pope. The last article posted is over a year ago from a UK tabloid. To equate comments made by The Pope or Cardinal Dolan as supportive or condoning of same sex marriage is not accurate. I'll leave it at that.,

 

Even if the secular media were to quote Cardinal Dolan there is no guarantee that they would quote accurately. We are dealing with a lazy and manipulative press more interested in spin and propaganda than the truth.

I do not trust the press because the vast majority of journalists have betrayed their true vocation in that they are called to be impartial and to seek the truth. There is no trustworthy newspaper out there, period!

 

It would be interesting to hear from those who choose to believe this article must be false ,

Funny thing; when the Pope is quoted and says something Catholic he is FANTASTIC. When he is quoted and says something heretical - "well, the media is lying, that just CAN'T be true" is what I hear.
Pope Francis continues to grant interviews to a man that supposedly continues to misquote him? No corrections, no retractions. Isn't the Pope actively participating in public scandal by continuing to be interviewed and quoted as saying heretical statements by Scalfari????

He damages virtue and integrity; he may even draw his brother into spiritual death. Scandal is a grave offense if by deed or omission another is deliberately led into a grave offense.

If there is one statement that is heretical then please state it. If not please stop. If you're mad at the Pope for his statements then please be truthful and state why. Not one word is against church doctrine and all his statements have been to help lead his flock towards God.

Are you saying if the Scalfari interviews are true , there is no problem?

 

What I'm saying is that the media has poisoned our culture. It seems that many today make a hobby of parsing every "quoted" comment of our Holy Father. It feels to me like a game of "gotcha!" as if this were a political battle.

I'm not afraid of discussion - but I'm concentrating on my particular mission. Every bit of attention I give to Church gossip is time stolen from what I'm called to do.

 

Eugenio Scalfari wrote that Pope Francis had told him that souls who do not go to heaven, that is achieve the Beatific Vision, are annihilated. Not a peep of denial, correction or clarification has come from Francis.

Annihilated? This is 100% heresy.
